Faldo Series expands South American efforts into Chile

Sir Nick Faldo has announced an expansion of his golf development efforts in South America with the launch of a new Faldo Series tournament in Chile.

The annual event in partnership with the Chilean Golf Federation will create new opportunity for young golfers in the country and take some to the Faldo Series South America Championship in Brazil.

“I remain committed to supporting golf development in South America, ever since we brought the Faldo Series to Brazil in 2008,” commented the six-time Major Champion. “I thank the Chilean Golf Federation for sharing our vision and for helping us to benefit even more young golfers across the region. Golf’s return to the 2016 Olympics in Rio will be an inspiration to the next generation of South Americans, including Chile, so it is important that we create these levels of opportunity and help them to achieve their ambitions.”

“This is an amazing opportunity for golf in Chile,” said Mauricio Galeno, President of the Chilean Golf Federation. “The Chilean Golf Federation is always looking for new ways to support golf in our country and to increase youth participation in this sport. Joining the Faldo Series is a big step in this effort and we hope it will be the beginning of a long and strong relationship with Sir Nick in order to develop relevance and penetration of golf in Chile.”

Supported by The R&A, the European Tour and Lough Erne Resort, Chile’s top young golfers aged 12 to 21 will compete in the 2012 Faldo Series Chile Championship on a date and venue to be announced. A programme of grass-roots activities will also take place during the inaugural tournament in a bid to create access to golf for a younger audience.

With the field in Chile divided into five age-categories – three for boys and two for girls – the winner of each category will qualify for the Faldo Series South America Championship in Brazil.

Established in 1996, 38 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 27 countries worldwide with over 5,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.

A very special round of golf

76 year old Peter Armstrong has won a very special round of golf, courtesy of CONCIAIR and the Hampshire PGA.

Peter has won the Hampshire PGA’s Grand Draw and will be flying off with three friends on a special CONCIAIR flight for a day’s golf at Le Touquet in France.

Peter, who is recovering from a triple bypass operation, has just joined Southsea Golf Club. He is a retired Army Major, who plays off 11 handicap.

His Grand Draw prize included return flights with CONCIAIR Ltd from Goodwood Aerodrome to Le Touquet, a round of golf and lunch in the Clubhouse.

‘I could have filled a jumbo jet with all those who wanted to make-up the four-ball’ said Peter. Even Simon Andrews, his PGA coach at the Portsmouth Golf Centre, is not guaranteed a seat on the plane unless of course Peter needs help with his game.

Other prize winners in the Grand Draw included Gary Brooks (Set of Wilson irons), David Penfold (Golf School for 9 people at Alresford GC) and Steve Prince (Round of Golf at Remedy Oak GC).

Faldo increases affordability of UK Series in 2012

The Faldo Series has announced its UK schedule for 2012 and a reduced entry fee that Sir Nick Faldo hopes will further increase the accessibility of its tournaments to young golfers of all backgrounds.

“With generous backing from our partners at The R&A, the European Tour and Lough Erne Resort, and strong support from our host venues, we are always striving to make the Faldo Series even more accessible,” said Faldo. “As a registered charity, the Series aims to bring opportunity to talented young golfers, regardless of background, so I hope that, by reducing the financial burden on golfers and their parents, even more youngsters can benefit.”

“We have been pleased to support Sir Nick, a three-time Open Champion, since he launched the Faldo Series in 1996,” commented Alison White, Assistant Director of Golf Development at The R&A. “Nick’s efforts match The R&A’s commitment to golf development, not only in the UK but also across Europe, Asia and South America where the Faldo Series is active. We applaud this latest initiative to make the Series even more accessible to young golfers in the UK.”

The UK schedule for 2012 features two new venues: Old Fold Manor (July 9-10) in Barnet, England and Panmure (August 21-22) in Angus, Scotland. Both clubs have hosted qualifying for The Open Championship.

Five more Open qualifying venues remain on the schedule: Moortown (April 3-4), Royal Ashdown Forest (April 24-25), Trentham (May 1-2), West Lancs (May 10-11) and Hollinwell (August 28-29), all in England. Pyle and Kenfig (July 3-4) in Wales, a two-time host of The Amateur Championship, also returns to the schedule after the success of its first Series event in 2011.

Amateur golfers born in 1991 or later can enter the Faldo Series online at www.nickfaldo.com/series at a cost of 55 pounds per person, reduced from 70 pounds in 2011. Entry includes a practice round and two tournament rounds at the chosen championship course and for five age-category winners at each venue – three boys and two girls – an exemption into the 16th Faldo Series Europe Grand Final next September and all local expenses covered during the 54-hole World Amateur Golf Ranking event at Lough Erne Resort in Northern Ireland.

Established in 1996, 38 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 27 countries worldwide with over 5,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.

The 2011 Faldo Series Europe schedule featured a record 18 tournaments in 11 different countries, including England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Czech Republic, Russia, Greece, The Netherlands, Brazil, Germany and Slovakia. Dukinfield Captain aims to chip in at Lombard Challenge Final

DUKINFIELD captain Steven Warburton will aim to prove he is a chip off the old block when he tees up in a national PGA final later this month.

Warburton has been having chipping lessons with the club’s PGA professional David Green who he partners in The Lombard Challenge in Turkey.

The pair earned their place in the PGA Pro-Captain Tournament after winning their qualifier at Dunham Forest Golf Club in August and will now take on nine other clubs in the £25,000 final which will be held over 36-holes at Antalya Golf Club’s PGA Sultan Course from November 25-26.

And Warburton believes he and Green have nothing to lose - so they plan to go for it!

Warburton, who is a safety manager, said: “David is a tremendous player and we have to feel as if we have a chance of winning.

“I’ve been taking lessons from David and he’s been trying to improve my chipping.

“I’ve played with him in club events and we enjoy a laugh but we’ll be taking this seriously, it’s a tremendous opportunity.”

Warburton, who has been playing golf for 29 years, admits he is proud to be representing the Manchester club in Turkey.

He added: “This is one of the best things I’ve ever done playing golf. It’s highly prestigious and a great honour to be involved. No captain or professional from Dukinfield has even been involved in anything like this to my memory.”

Warburton revealed their participation in the final has created plenty of interest among Dukinfield club members.

He added: “A lot of people at the club have been supporting us and asking about the final. A few of them have even come up and asked me if it’s going to be on the telly!”

“They’re very proud and it’s a proud moment for the club.”

For Lombard meanwhile, the PGA Pro-Captain event has been a welcome return to golf following their long association with the PGA National Pro-Am Championship.

As managing director Alexander Baldock explained: “Having previously enjoyed a very successful relationship with the PGA in sponsoring the PGA National Pro-Am we were confident that partnering with the PGA to present The Lombard Challenge, a PGA Pro-Captain Tournament, would be an exciting initiative to be part of and one that we are very proud of too – and it has proved just that!

Shacklady targets Turkey shoot-out

SERIAL winner David Shacklady is relishing the chance to add the end-of-season PGA Play-Offs title to the 200-plus assorted victories he’s notched up in a career spanning more than two decades.

“That’s been my target since the start of the season,” he said after earning his place in next week’s Turkey shoot-out by winning the North Region Order of Merit for the second time since 2007.

But he also admitted that not even the prospect of qualifying for next year’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth could compare with competing against the United States in the PGA Cup in California nearly two months ago.

The Mossock Hall professional, leading points scorer for the losing GB&I team, said: “I’ve appeared in a couple of Open Championships but nothing can beat that experience. It was totally different, especially playing for the team with everyone rooting for each other. I loved every minute of it. It was an unbelievable trip.”

Shacklady, 44, who won the Kerr Investments Cumbria Classic in May – surprisingly his first merit title – expects to arrive at the PGA Sultan Course at Antalya Golf Club completely free from the back injury he sustained mid-summer. “I’ve just moved house but I’m going easy on the do-it-yourself jobs,” he added.

In one of the closest finishes for years, he claimed the Mike Slater Memorial Order of Merit Trophy by 24 points from Aran Wainwright and by 46 from David Smith, who took the last qualifying spot for Turkey where three days of action start next Monday (Nov 21).

Wainwright, 36, is unlikely to forget how he booked his place.

“I was offered the position of head professional at Mid Yorks Golf Club, where I was an assistant, on the morning of the first round of the Spirotech Open in Manchester,” he explained.

“It was just the incentive I needed. Suddenly I felt all the pressure was taken off me and I went out and shot 10-under-par and won the tournament.”

Swinton Park assistant Smith, 38, who won the De Vere Leeds Cup – professional golf’s oldest trophy – also reached the PGA Play-Offs in 2007.

“I didn’t do too well but I’m hoping to improve this time, especially with the event being held a couple of weeks before I go the European Tour School,” he said.
