Cameron shines on incredible first day at Galgorm Castle

A stunning opening round from Ross Cameron left him in pole position after the opening day of the latest PGA EuroPro Tour event.

Cameron shot 63 (-9), while Ian Ridgway also made the first hole-in-one of the season with his perfect shot at the 141-yard par-three seventh.

The Galgorm Castle Northern Ireland Open (in association with Ulster Bank) is the fifth tournament of the 2011 campaign and Scotland's Cameron holds a three-shot lead.

His flawless round included an eagle at the ninth and birdies at the second, third, fourth, tenth, 16th, 17th and 18th.

Last week's winner and runner-up are in the hunt for more money at Galgorm Castle as Chris Hanson (Woodsome Hall, Huddersfield), the champion at Longhirst Hall, and James Busby, second last week, are both on -6.

Busby (The Shropshire) eagled the second, while Hanson's total included three successive birdies from the seventh to ninth holes.

Order of Merit leader Graeme Clark (Doncaster) is also set for another profitable week as he joins Busby and Hanson in tied second on 66 (-6).

A total of £10,000 will go to the winner and Clark, who has already pocketed more than £16,000 from the previous four events, is set to move closer to a place on next year’s Challenge Tour.

Clark played at that level in 2008 and with the top five players on the money list at the end of the season advancing to that level, Clark could take a massive leap towards that target.

Ridgway ended the day on 67 (-5) but is on course for his highest finish of the season after only making the cut in one other EuroPro Tour event in 2010.

David Jones (Bushfoot, County Antrim)) is the leading golfer in the event from Northern Ireland as he is on 68 (-4), while Damian Mooney’s eagle at the last left him on 69 (-3) and well placed to qualify for the final round.

Each of the competitors will play a second round on Thursday and at the end of the day of the top 50 players plus ties will advance to last round on Friday.

The popular event at Galgorm Castle, Ballymena follows a successful tournament at the same venue last year where more than 1,000 people attended the final day.

All of the action is being recorded and a two-hour highlights package, produced by Matchroom Sport, will be broadcast on Sky Sports on July 13.

Ryan takes route 66

RYAN O’Neill used to dream about playing football for his home town team Wigan Athletic.

But his hopes were shattered when the Premier League club he turned out for at centre back in the youth side released him as a 16-year-old.

And that was almost as big a disappointment when he did not make the grade with Wigan Warriors Rugby League.

Sport-mad O’Neill picked himself up off the canvas and tried his hand at golf and after going under the tutelage of Alan Crompton, a coach as nearby Haigh Hall, he turned professional.

“I used to play occasionally when I had some spare time but then took the game more seriously when I kicked football and rugby into touch,” said the 22-year-old Penwortham assistant.

“I got down to one handicap as an amateur and I pushed on from there,” he added after storming to a career best six-under-par 66 in the De Vere PGA North Region Championship first round at Blackpool resort Heron’s Reach.

He grabbed seven birdies and his one error was a three-putt bogey at the 201-yard seventh as he led by a shot from 21-year-old Tom Murray, assistant at Didsbury and son of European Tour winner Andy, and Morpeth’s David Clark.

Murray’s already won three professional events in two seasons as a professional and, like O’Neill, this was his first Order of Merit tournament.

“People will always compare me with my dad but I don’t live in his shadow,” he said after his five-birdie haul.

“My short game usually gets me out of trouble but today I hit 17 greens in regulation,” he added.

Clark reeled off seven birdies but admitted he “got lucky” at times, saving par at the 10th with a 20-foot putt after a couple of wayward strokes.

“All my bad shots stayed in play which made the difference,” he reflected.

Waterton Park’s Lee Collinson, another trainee pro, led the Yorkshire challenge with 71. Defending champion, Lindrick’s John King, was a shot behind him.

Meanwhile, it was not so much a baptism of fire but more of a learning curve for Darlington assistant Laura Harvey, the first women to play in a North Region Order of Merit event.

After returning an 80, the 24-year-old said: “The experience won’t put me off playing against the men and I know have the ability to improve my game.

“It was good to watch them and although they always outdrove me I was not concerned. My short game let me down and I made a few mistakes with my irons.”

Laura confirmed she will return to the resort in August for the James Brearley Lancashire Open at Blackpool North Shore.

LEADERS: 66 Ryan O’Neill (Penwortham); 67 Tom Murray (Didsbury), David Clark (Morpeth); 68 Barry Taylor (Houghwood); 69 David Shacklady (Mossock Hall), Tom Minshull (Delamere Forest); 69 David Corsby (Fleetwood); 70 David Smith (Swinton Park), Will Barnes (Garstang), V Guest (Teesside).

Sir Nick Faldo encourages participation in the NGCC

“I'm delighted to lend my support to the National Golf Club Challenge's tournament in support of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation.”

Sir Nick Faldo has lent his whole hearted support to a national charity golf event which will take place on the 23rd and 24th of July to fundraise for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation.

The National Golf Club Challenge will bring thousands of golfers together on the same weekend at clubs throughout the UK as part of a nationwide charity golf event in memory of the late Seve Ballesteros. The purpose is simple; to raise as much money as possible for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation, which works in partnership with Cancer Research UK to beat brain cancer.

In an effort to encourage golf clubs to take part, Sir Nick Faldo commented “I'm delighted to lend my support to the National Golf Club Challenge's tournament in support of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation. This event is not only a great way for golfers from across the UK to raise money for an extremely worthy cause but also a very fitting way to honour one of European golf's true legends.”

As well as helping raise money for research into brain cancer, golfers up and down the UK will be playing for a place in the grand final which will be held at The Shire London – the only Seve Ballesteros designed golf course in the UK – in September. The finalists will battle it out to win The Seve Challenge trophy, designed by master silversmiths Thomas Lyte and compete for some outstanding golfing prizes, including golfing holidays to Spain and Egypt.

Seve set up the Seve Ballesteros Foundation in partnership with Cancer Research UK, with the ambition of being the biggest funder of brain cancer research in the UK. Since 2009 the Foundation has raised almost £1.5 million for Cancer Research UK’s life saving brain cancer research through a variety of events and partnerships.

Seve will always be remembered for the strength and determination he showed not only on the golf course but also in the last years of his life, as he bravely fought brain cancer. The Foundation – and events such as the National Golf Club Challenge – are part of Seve’s lasting legacy.

The format for the National Golf Club Challenge makes it easy for clubs everywhere to take part. The challenge competition is designed to be incorporated into each participating golf club's monthly stableford event, with each club turning the day into their own charity golf event, raising funds for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation. The competing clubs submit their aggregate scores from their best players on the day, with teams from the top four clubs being invited to take part in the final in September.

For more information about the National Golf Club Challenge, including how to enter your golf club, go to www.thesevechallenge.com.

Trophy glory for young James

JAMES Newton gave further evidence of his burgeoning talent when he won the Hulbert Trophy at Hopwood Cottage.

It was the 16-year-old Prestbury plus one ranked player’s first victory in the Cleveland Srixon Northern Order of Merit as he finished four shots ahead of the field.

And his achievement won’t have escaped the attention of the England selectors who have already found him a slot in the Under-18 squad.

The Cheshire player, tipped to become the next David Horsey, took up the game when he was eight, joining Macclesfield with his dad Clive are where Jamie Donaldson is attached.

The European Tour player, like Horsey, has such a high regard for the youngster that he even caddied for him in last week’s Open Championship regional qualifier at Mere.

He failed by two shots but makes no secret of his ambition to follow Donaldson into the upper echelons of the game.

Last year he finished fifth in the Faldo Series at Irish border club Loch Erne and met the resort’s most famous member Rory McIlroy, the newly-crowned US Open champion.

Newton fired a brace of 69s at Hopwood, each containing five birdies, for a six-under-par total as Styal’s James McCormick claimed second place.

SCORES (Par=72): 138 James Newton (Prestbury) 69 69; 142 James McCormick (Styal) 73 69; 143 James Bolton (Formby) 71 72; 144 Jack Bottomly-Clift (Crompton & Royton) 71 73, Chris Howard (Manchester) 71 73; 145 Roger Smithies (Manchester) 72 73, Jordan Flint (Manchester) 71 74; 146 Steve McGlynn (Blackburn) 75 71; 147 Ciaran Doherty (Bury) 78 69, Henry Tomlinson (Royal Lytham) 73 74, James Gillesbie (Morecambe) 70 77; 148 Nick Tomlinson (Mold) 77 71.

About Moortown Golf Club
Moortown Golf Club has always held a richly deserved reputation as one of the country’s finest Championship Golf courses.

Originally designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, Moortown is set in 175 acres of dramatically contrasting mainly level woodland and moorland.

From the opening par 5 there are many fine holes to enjoy including the new 6th, rated the most difficult, and the famous Gibraltar par 3 10th with its sloping plateau green, the Club’s signature hole.

Typical of all great courses there is a classic finish. With its fairway favouring strategically placed bunkers, the 18th requires two exceptional shots to find the well-guarded green which nestles under the Clubhouse windows.

It was the venue for the 1929 Ryder Cup and more recently has hosted Open Championship Qualifying.

Report from Last Year
Last year we had a fabulous day with five-handicapper Max Winterburn from Pannal Golf Club taking the overall honours when he produced a sterling round of golf over the Alister MacKenzie masterpiece.

Max's round was not only the best nett score on the day but also the best gross tally, however, because competitors can only win one prize the gross award went to Louis Tomlinson, a two-handicapper from Haydock Park Golf Club, who posted a 77.

Winterburn raced to the turn in 37 (one over par) thanks to birdies at the first, fifth and seventh. His only blemishes coming at the third and eighth, where he made bogeys, and a double at the sixth. On the back-nine he produced some solid golf with five par and fours bogeys.

Roper & Tuddenham share first prize

Tuddenham, Rosier (Captain, Bishopswood) and Roper.

Ian Roper (Corhampton) and Roger Tuddenham (Hedge End) shared a handsome prize of £1500.00 for winning last weeks two-day Bishopswood Golf Course Pro-Am Tournament.

Both Professionals shot five-under-par totals of 139 for the 36 hole Tournament at the Tadley course. They finished four shots ahead of Chris Hudson (Southwood), Gary Stubbington (Hockley) and Jon Barnes (Ampfield), who shared third place on 143.

Ian Roper, Cliff Rumble, Chris Thomas and Nick Edwards (132) won Thursday’s Pro-Am and Chris Hudson, Ken Moss, Sandy Moss & Alison Goudge (128) won on Friday.

Other prize-winners included Tim Harris, Tony Grover, Mick Davies, Peter Hickling, Andy Stalsberg, Keith Rosier, Ken Paul, Alan Abby and Nigel Courtenay.

The Tournament celebrated the opening of Bishopswood’s new clubhouse facility.

The Tournament was sponsored by Amcrest Ltd. Clark wins for first time on EuroPro Tour since August 2009

Graeme Clark has won his first PGA EuroPro Tour tournament since August 2009 after a dramatic final day at The Rusty’s Travel Classic at Longhirst Hall, Northumberland.

Clark sealed the £10,000 first prize after edging out James Busby in the first hole of play-off after the pair had finished on -3 after three rounds of golf.

The victory takes Clark to the top of the Order of Merit after he also finished second at Burhill in Surrey earlier in the month.

He has enjoyed great success on the EuroPro Tour having finished top of the Order of Merit in 2007 and, with more than £16,000 pocketed from the first four events, is well placed for a return to the Challenge Tour.

Clark (Doncaster) had an unsuccessful time on the Challenge Tour in 2008 but feels he is better equipped to cope at that level now.

“I struggled a bit that year and I wasn’t organised enough and it was a big difference flying everywhere compared to driving everywhere,” admitted Clark.

“You would come back on the Sunday and be flying out again on the Monday.

“But now the Challenge Tour is a big target for this year but I have to keep concentrating and I’m a more consistent player now.

“This win means a lot and it’s a big win for me and my family. You just have to keep working hard – that’s all you can do.

“I’ve got a lot of confidence at the moment and I’ve been up there but it’s nice to be in the final group and actually win.”

Clark started the final day with a share of the lead alongside three other players all on -4 but a double bogey at the fourth saw him lose his advantage.

However, he responded well with three successive birdies between the tenth and 12th before holding his nerve in the play-off as Busby’s attempt for par on the first extra hole lipped out.

Busby (The Shropshire) claimed second place for the second time this season after a similar finish at Wensum Valley in Norfolk and moved up to fifth in the money list.

Scotland’s Lee Harper (Archerfield Links, East Lothian) looked to be joining Busby and Clark in the play-off but bogeyed the last, although his third place finish is still his best Tour performance since he won at Selsdon Park, Surrey, in September 2007.

Chris Hanson (Woodsome Hall, Huddersfield) and Trevor Jones (Whipsnade Park, Hertfordshire) also shared the lead at the start of the final day but both players finished in tied fourth after rounds of 73 (+3) saw them end on -1.

Hanson, who was aiming to become the first player in six seasons to win back-to-back events after triumphing at Bovey Castle last week, made a birdie at the fourth but four bogeys between the 10th and 15th cost him dearly.

Jones also started his last round solidly but his hopes were dashed with a triple-bogey seven at the par-four eighth.

Highlights from Longhirst Hall will be broadcast on Sky Sports on July 6 and the next Tour event takes place at Galgorm Castle, Ballymena, Northern Ireland from June 29 to July 1.

Open Competitions at Dukinfield

There's still time to secure a place in open competitions at Dukinfield Golf Club in Cheshire.

The Founders Cup, an individual strokeplay tournament for male golfers, will be held on Saturday 27th August. At only £10 per person (including two's) this is fabulous value for weekend golf and the course is sure to be in top class condition. A handicap of 24 or less is required.

A Gents Pairs Open is scheduled for Sunday 11th September. The format is Betterball Stableford with an entry-fee of £16 per pair, including two's! Again a handicap of 24 or less is required.

As you can expect places will fill up quickly so don't delay if you would like to reserve a place in any of the above tournaments

Hanson aims for back-to-back tour titles

Chris Hanson is aiming to become the first golfer in nearly six years to win back-to-back events on the PGA EuroPro Tour.

Hanson, a winner at Bovey Castle last week, moved into contention on the second day of The Rusty’s Travel Classic at Longhirst Hall in Northumberland.

He began the second day five shots behind overnight leader Graeme Clark (Doncaster) but an eagle at the third followed by birdies at the fourth and seventh saw Hanson (Woodsome Hall, Huddersfield) take a share of the lead.

Hanson joins three other players – Lee Harper, Graeme Clark and Trevor Jones – on -4 with one round left.

If Hanson was to finish first tomorrow then he would become the first player to win two successive EuroPro Tour events since Simon Robinson triumphed at Swallow, Suffolk and then at Morley Hayes, Derbyshire in July 2005.

Clark shot a score of 71 (+1) on the second day but ended strongly with birdies at the 17th and 18th to stay in the hunt for the £10,000 top prize.

Scotland’s Harper (Archerfield Links, East Lothian) was an early clubhouse leader on the second day after an inconsistent round of 68 (-2) which included six birdies and four bogeys but took him to -4 for the tournament, and he was later joined on this total by Trevor Jones (Whipsnade Park, Hertfordshire).

James Busby (The Shropshire) produced one of the best rounds of the day with a score of 66 (-4) as he aims for his first Tour victory since August 2009. Busby is currently on -3, the same score as Ireland’s Tim Rice (Limerick) after he shot 69 (-1) today.

Graham Powell (Banstead Downs, Surrey) began Thursday’s play in second place but a double bogey at the 17th could come back to haunt him, although he is still in the top ten.

The top 50 players and ties have advanced to the final round, but, in tricky conditions, some big names failed to make it.

Dale Marmion, a runner-up last week at Burhill missed out at Longhirst Hall after a round of 83 (+13) on Thursday.

“Wow,” said a stunned Marmion (Eaton, Cheshire). “Never have I hit the ball half decently and putted and scored so badly. I had some cricket scores out there.”

Zane Scotland (Princes, Kent) began the second day in tied sixth but his hopes were dashed as he went round in 80 (+10) and missed the cut.

Clark aiming for more EuroPro Tour success

Graeme Clark is closing in on the top spot in the Order of Merit after a fine opening day in the latest event on the PGA EuroPro Tour.

Clark shot a round of 65 (-5) to lead the way at The Rusty’s Travel Classic at Longhirst Hall in Northumberland, the fourth competition in the EuroPro Tour season.

He is currently fourth in the Order of Merit after finishing second at Burhill in Surrey but will collect another £10,000 if he holds on to his lead for another two rounds.

Clark (Doncaster) has enjoyed great success on the Tour as he won more money than anyone else in 2007 and last won an event in August 2009.

He has a one-shot lead over Graham Powell (Banstead Downs, Surrey), who ended his round well with birdies at his last two holes.

Powell is one shot ahead of three players, Finland’s Max Brackley, James Need and Toby Burden (Hayling, Hampshire) who all shot rounds of 67 (-3).

Need is hoping this will be a breakthrough event as he has only made the cut in one of three events this season and at only two of ten competitions last season.

But two fine rounds on Thursday and Friday will catapult him up the Order of Merit, where a top five finish at the end of the campaign would propel him on to the Challenge Tour.

A host of players are on -2, including Dan Seymour (Newbury Golf Centre, Berkshire), Jamie Howarth (De Vere Mottram Hall, Cheshire), Tim Rice (Limerick, Ireland), Lee Harper (Archerfield Links, East Lothian) and Zane Scotland (Princes, Kent).

Chris Hanson (Woodsome Hall, Huddersfield) won last week at Bovey Castle in Devon and had a mixed first day as birdies at the first, third, seventh and 18th were countered by bogeys at the fifth, eighth, 10th and 17th.

“Level par today in the first round,” said Hanson. “I played pretty steady and my focus was very good.”

Local player Karl Hepple, who is aiming to become the second amateur to win on the EuroPro tour after James Robinson did so in 2010, was one of a number of players on -1 after the opening round.

All the action from Longhirst Hall will be filmed and Matchroom sport will produce a two-hour highlights package, which will be broadcast on Sky Sports on Wednesday, July 6.

First lady Laura takes on the men

LAURA Harvey will create history when she plays in the De Vere PGA North Region Championship at Blackpool’s Heron’s Reach next week (June 29-30).

For the 24-year-old assistant professional at Darlington Golf Club will be the first woman to compete in a regional order of merit event.

And the thought of pegging up with the big hitters doesn’t worry her in the slightest.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Laura whose only concession will be playing from tees a maximum 10 per cent shorter than the designated ones.

“If I perform well it will give me a lot of encouragement to take my game a stage further and improve my chances of qualifying for the Ladies European Tour,” she said.

“But I won’t go down that route until after I’ve finished my PGA training next year. That will set me up for life if I don’t make it as a full-time player.”

Laura refused to draw a parallel between herself and Michelle Wie and Annika Sörenstam who tried to compete in USPGA tournaments a few years ago.

“Some people will disagree with me but I believe there is a huge gap between the two sexes because of length of courses and the distance the men hit the ball today,” she argued.

Ascot-born Laura moved around the country with her parents John and Wendy when they worked as stewards at golf clubs including Nuneaton, where she picked up her first club as a 10-year-old, Richmond, Keswick and Elland.

Highlights of her amateur career were representing Yorkshire in four English County Finals victories and winning the Northern Girls’ Championship.

About Heaton Park
The Heaton Park Golf Course is a picturesque championship standard golf course, situated in the scenic grounds of Heaton Park.

Designed by five times Open Champion J. H. Taylor it was opened to the public in 1911 and has been the host venue for many prestigious events, both professional and amateur.

The course boasts spectacular views over the Pennines and surrounding countryside and offers several imposing tee shots.

Three lakes in the park, play a prominent part in every round, especially on the 193 yard 11th hole. Indeed, former Open Champion, Henry Cotton once described this hole as "the toughest par-3 in England".

Peter Allis also described the 15th hole as one of the most scenic holes he'd ever seen.

Mixed Fortunes for Adams

The winning team
Swanmore's Martin Adams enjoyed a day of contrasting fortunes in winning the Hayling Golf Club Pro-Am on Friday (17th June).

Out early in the day Adams played some scintillating golf for the first fourteen holes of his round, including an eagle 2 at the twelfth. Standing on the fifteenth tee he was six-under-par for his round but then dropped five shots in his last four holes as a strong south-easterly wind took its toll.

Martin eventually signed for a one-under-par score of 70 and was left to reflect on his disappointing finish.

However within an hour the weather conditions deteriorated as heavy rain swept across the Hayling course and it soon became apparent that Martin’s score was going to be impossible to match. In fact Parkstone's Martyn Thompson came closest with a one-over-par round of 72.

Thompson also won the Pro-Am with his team of Greg Britton, Brian Sweeney and Matt Gordon. Second place went to Rob Gowers (South Winchester) and his team of Rob Styles, Neil Drinkwater and Keith Larner.

Other prize-winners included Terry Drake, Anne Aylward, George Hill, Roger Bayley, Pete Nicholls and Paul Dowdell.

The Tournament was sponsored by Peter Cooper VW Group. Other Companies who supported the Tournament included Bishops Printers, Fullers, Waverleys, L&S Waste Management, Gable Fall Safe, Newtown House Hotel, The Lifeboat Inn, Fox Estates, Bluestone Design, Echo Mortgages, Fuller Smith and Turner, Taylorcocks Accountants, Oakwood Groundworks, World Courier and Percival Aviation.

Steve counts his blessings

STEVE McGlynn won the Calvert Trophy at Ashton & Lea on a testing day at the Preston club when only two players beat par.

The Blackburn plus one handicapper beat his Lancashire team-mate Richie Blundell on countback thanks to a second round 69.

McGlynn, who won the Pleasington Antlers last year, trailed the Hillside man by five shots after opening with 77.

But he made the most of the improving conditions in the afternoon, picking up five birdies to offset three bogeys for a four-over-par total.

Blundell closed with 74 to add to his earlier 72 as newly crowned Lancashire champion John Carroll finish third a shot off the pace.

And that was enough to lift the Huyton & Prescot ace, who has won three times in the Cleveland Srixon Northern Order of Merit this season, to 610 points – a massive 300 in front of Formby’s Kris Taylor.

SCORES (Par=71): 146 Steve McGlynn (Blackburn) 77 69, Richie Blundell (Hillside) 72 74; 147 John Carroll (Huyton & Prescot) 74 73; 149 Patrick Bell (Royal Lytham & St Annes) 73 76; 150 Jack Garrood (Pinner Hill) 69 81; 151 Louis Tomlinson (Haydock Park) 77 74; 152 Paul Bartlet (Ashton & Lea) 75 77, Ken Hudson (Hart Common) 74 78, Chris Rabbich (Jurupa Hills) 73 79; 153 James Bolton (Formby) 78 75; 154 Andrew Michie (Ashton & Lea) 79 75, Reece Cranfield (Haigh Hall) 78 76.

John comes good at Fixby

The Fixby Challenge Winner - John Goodland
Haydock Park's John Goodland found the rolling fairways of Fixby to his liking when he became the first golfer to book a place in the grand final of the 2011 Northern Matchplay Golf Championship sponsored by Golf de la Luz.

The former civil engineer, who took early retirement two years ago but continues to work part-time as an exam adjudicator, carded a fine two-under par nett 69 at Huddersfield Golf Club on a day when the testing championship course bared it's teeth.

Indeed only three of the 54 competitors bettered their handicap with the majority of scores ballooning into the eighties and beyond.

A stiff breeze greeted early competitors in The Fixby Challenge and whilst that died down as the day progressed the afternoon players had to contend with a handful of short sharp showers. The weather didn't detract from the course though which was playing at it's imperious best and provided a stern but fair examination for all players.

Goodland, playing in the penultimate group, tied with Scarthingwell's David Williams (14 hcp) on 69 but was given the verdict virtue of a better last nine holes. Early starter Paul Keenan (8 hcp) from Towenely Golf Club had held the lead for most of the day after carding a gross 78 for a nett 70 and was the only player in the field to break 80.

Meanwhile Goodland, who had not made a buffer zone in his previous ten outings, turned the form book on it's head and paid tribute to his driving as the reason for his success.

Goodland's chip-in on the 9th captured on camera
The delighted 11-handicapper said afterwards, "I played out of my skin and drove the ball really well. I can't remember playing a single shot from the rough all day."

However, it wasn't just his long game that was on song. A sublime chip from over the back of the ninth green, when at least one dropped shot looked inevitable, found the bottom of the cup for a momentum boosting par-save.

That moment of magic got the 56-year-old to the turn in 41 which had started with a disastrous double-bogey six before a birdie at the second got him back on track. A dropped shot on the 12th, followed by another double-bogey on the par three 13th, looked to have de-railed his bid but a strong finish of four pars in the last five holes saw Goodland home and dry.

He said, "The double on 13 was a complete nightmare. I had the honour on the tee and couldn't decide if the wind was helping or not. I thought I had done the hard work when I hit my four-wood pin-high just to the left of the green but then I chipped straight over the green and down the hill the other side."

Keenan driving off on the1st tee
The only further blemish, on an inward nine that he covered in just 39 strokes, was to come when a shot was frittered away on the 15th although he could have  balanced the books on the last.

"I left myself with a six-foot birdie putt on the last and when that slipped by I thought it might cost me." Said Goodland who lives in Lowton near Leigh and joined Haydock Park five years ago following a twenty year absence from the game.

Goodland will now line up at The Alwoodley Golf Club on the 28th and 29th September, where he will compete against the winners from six regional matchplay competitions and a lucky ballot winner, to try and win a golf holiday to Spain provided by Holmfirth-based Golf de la Luz.

Goodland, who hasn't played Alwoodley before joked afterwards, "My wife hates golf so when I get home and tell her I'm off to the grand final I don't know what she'll say. It's just a few days after our anniversary so I'll have to make sure I get her a good present. If I win a golf holiday to Spain I dread to think what she will think!"

A sliver of hope remains for Williams because Goodland is also still in the knockout section of the Lancashire Matchplay and should he go on to triumph in that at West Lancs Golf Club the Scarthingwell man will take his place. Leeds-based Williams, who teaches I.T. on a part-time basis in primary schools, is still going strong in the Yorkshire Matchplay so may still make the Alwoodley date via the conventional route. Keenan, a joiner from Burnley, had the consolation of collecting a £200 voucher for the best gross round.

Sharp-shooter Jarred Hazelden
Meanwhile Outlane's Jarred Hazelden bagged a complimentary two-ball with buggy at De Vere Oulton Hall thanks to his approach to seven feet on the par four 7th hole, the closest of the day. And Allerthorpe Park's Mike Walsh was the most accurate on the par 3 8th with a tee-shot to just over six feet for a similar prize.

Dan Thomson, a director at main sponsor Golf de la Luz, sampled the Fixby course for the first time and was pleased with what he found, "I thought the course was top class, in really good condition and proved a true test for competitors trying to reach our grand final. The green's were fantastic and I enjoyed it immensely."

Indeed every player paid tribute to the stunning greens that were served up by head green-keeper Ben Johnson who had them double-cut just prior to play commencing and had selected some testing but accessible pin placements. The putting surfaces were so good in fact one player commented that having played over 30 top courses already this year only Turnberry's matched the ones at Fixby for trueness, roll and quality.

The focus now turns to Pleasington where one pair will book a spot in the grand final by winning the Pleasington Pairs Pursuit at the Open Championship Qualifying course near Blackburn in August.

Sensational last round gives Hanson the title

Chris Hanson produced a sensational final round of 63 (-7) to win the Motocaddy Masters at Bovey Castle in Devon.

Hanson started the day four shots behind overnight leaders Dale Marmion and Graham Benson but Hanson's 63, the lowest round by any golfer on the PGA EuroPro Tour so far this season, took him to the title.

His flawless round included birdies at the second, third, tenth, 13th, 14th, 15th and 18th and left him as clubhouse leader and sweating on the outcome.

Marmion on -9 was the only man who could catch him but could only manage to shoot par at the last nine holes as Hanson won the competition and the £10,000 prize by one shot.

Hanson (Woodsome Hall, Huddersfield) has had great success at Bovey Castle as he also won there in 2006 and was a day one leader in 2007 before finishing third.

This is his first EuroPro Tour victory in five years, although he came close in 2009 when he had a five-shot lead going into the last day at Collingtree Park, Northamptonshire, but a horror final round of 81 left him in tied eighth.

"I'm a much better golfer now than I was five years ago," said Hanson. "I've matured as a golfer, have a full-time caddy and have got a really good team around me. I've just really matured and focused."

"After those mess ups I've had on final days it's nice to be able to put them all to bed now. Collingtree Park was a massive upset for me and knocked me off balance. I had some time off the EuroPro Tour so to come back and win is absolutely great.

"I think my chances of making the Challenge Tour are really high. I've played well in the first two events. But I want to get on the main tour and will just keep doing what I'm doing.

"I played fantastically today and controlled my golf ball the best I've ever done. I just stuck to my gameplan and it seemed to work.

"It's strange waiting to see if you've won as I was told Dale needed to chip in for a play-off but ten minutes later I still didn't know. I went to hit a few balls and then someone told me, but you don't feel you have won until you have the trophy.

"I knew how tough the course is but I didn't think I would have to shoot seven-under to put the pressure on so hats off to Dale as well."

Marmion, who shot 68 (-2) on Friday, was quick to congratulate Hanson. "I have to give credit where it's due and it was an unbelievable round from Chris, -7 in those conditions," said Marmion.

"I thought me shooting -2 would have been enough but unfortunately it wasn't. But overall I'm happy with how I played and there are plenty of positives to take from it. Second isn't too bad a finish."

Gareth Evans (Crow Nest Park, Dewsbury) was in third on -6, while James Ruth, Ed Wood (Crow Wood, Glasgow) and Nick James (Wenvoe Castle, Cardiff) all finished in tied fourth on -5.

The action from Bovey Castle will be broadcast on June 29 and the next EuroPro Tour event is at Longhirst Hall, Northumberland from June 22 to 24.
