Richie stretches lead in merit race

RICHIE Blundell extended his lead in the Cleveland Srixon Northern Order of Merit to 95 points after his victory in the Mere Trophy.

The plus two ranked player from Hillside left the rest of the field trailing in his wake with a stunning second round five-under-par 66 which included seven birdies, five on the outward half.

Added to his opening 70, he finished five shots clear of Lancashire team-mate Paul Kinnear, from Formby.

But with six events remaining, starting at Bolton Old Links on Saturday followed by Rossendale the next day, there’s still all to play for with five of the leading 10 players within striking distance of Blundell.

Long-time leader John Carroll, the Lancashire County champion from Huyton & Prescot, is lying second 35 points in front of Blackburn’s Steve McGlynn while title holder Mark Young, from Longridge, is 290 adrift in fourth spot.
