Fawcett cuts it fine

ROB Fawcett became the third successive first time winner in the Cleveland Srixon Northern Order of Merit - but he nearly blew his chance of claiming the Bosden Trophy at Hazel Grove.

The Dukinfield player appeared to be coasting to a comfortable victory until he bogeyed the last two holes in the second round.

And he was mightily relieved to get the verdict on countback from Ringway’s Henry Featherstone who also clocked up his maiden win in the Astbury Jewel five days earlier.

Plus one ranked Fawcett trailed a shot behind his rival after an opening 71, again losing his concentration when he double bogeyed the 17th.

But five birdies on the outward half in the afternoon and three more on the home stretch kept him in front of the chasing pack until his late lapses.

SCORES (Par=71): 141 Rob Fawcett (Dukinfield) 71 70, Henry Featherstone (Ringway) 70 71; 144 Fraser Macleod (Hazel Grove) 71 73; 146 Nick Tomlinson (Mold) 74 72; 148 Conor Murphy (Denton) 75 73; 151 Daniel Creaney (Southport & Ainsdale) 77 74, Paul Sargent (Haydock Park) 76 75, Chris Owens (West Derby) 72 79; 152 Harry Hulme (Mere) 76 76, Grant Little (Brampton) 76 76; 153 Alistair Waddell (Styal) 76 77; 154 Scott Kempson (Hazel Grove) 82 72.
