Daniel Westermark (El Paraiso) won the 21st Hampshire PGA Overseas Pro-Am last Friday (18/3) in a tense finish on Spain’s Costa del Sol.
Westermark, a former European and Challenge Tour player, emerged victorious by a single shot in the 72 hole pro-am event.
It was the fifth time that Westermark had won the event in the last nine years but only the second time he had won the title outright having previously shared the honours with Rob Edwards (2005), David Porter (2006) and James Ablett (2007).
David Wilton’s team of Paul Graham, Steve Walsom and Mario Constantinou won the Pro-AM with a twenty-under-par score of 308 points, eleven ahead of Westermark’s team of Tony Miles, Frank McCarroll and Tony Daly.
In all eight teams won prizes. In addition Mike Steadman, Daniel Westermark, Gary Macdonald, Gary Corbin and Tony Daly all won ‘Nearest-the-Pin’ prizes. Pride of place in the Nearest the Pin stakes went to Kieren Baldwin (Elsenham), who holed his five iron tee shot to win the Pro prize at the fiendishly difficult 8th hole on the New Course at San Roque.
The El Higueral Bowmaker preceded the 72 hole Pro-Am. The Bowmaker was won by Shaun Hall (The County), who shot a seven-under-par score of 43 points. Dean Jones was the leading amateur.
The week long event was played at the San Roque Club, La Canada GC and El Higueral GC. Teams stayed in the PYR Hotel in Marbella and amateur prizes were supplied by Titleist and Footjoy.
