Max is Moortown winner

Congratulations to Max Winterburn (left) from Pannal Golf Club who won our end of season golf day at Moortown Golf Club today.

Five-handicapper Max fired a fabulous gross 76 for a nett 71 to win by one stroke from Knaresborough's Andrew Yarrow (8 hcp). Richard Peer took third spot with a 73 but only after a back six count-back.

Max's round was not only the best nett score on the day but also the best gross tally, however, because competitors can only win one prize the gross award went to Louis Tomlinson (pictured below), a two-handicapper from Haydock Park Golf Club, who posted a 77.

Winterburn raced to the turn in 37 (one over par) thanks to birdies at the first, fifth and seventh. His only blemishes coming at the third and eighth, where he made bogeys, and a double at the sixth. On the back-nine he produced some solid golf with five par and fours bogeys.

Yarrow proved to be the 'par 3 masters' and recovered from a slow start with a birdie two at the fourth. Although bogies at the next three holes and the ninth looked like he was out of contention he battled back and a solid inward half, with another two on the 17th, saw the North Yorkshire player record a nett 72 which earned him runners-up spot.

Tomilinson was quick out of the blocks and got to three-under par after just seven holes and despite dropped shots at the eighth and ninth he was still out in 35 (one-under). His second-nine didn't match that of the front-nine but he still finished with a very respectable gross 77.

Competitors complimented the warm welcome they received at Moortown from all the club staff and praised the 1929 Ryder Cup course for the test of golf it provided. Glowing references were paid to the trueness of the greens and the fair but tough playability of the course.

Everybody to a man said that they were already looking forward to coming back and playing the Open Qualifying venue again.

Skirt Golf!

Skirt Golf is being organised by professional golfer Jonathan Gidney to raise awareness and money for Breast Cancer Research.

So why Skirt Golf? Jon made a joke on his Twitter page saying that if he ever reached 1,000 followers he would play a round of Golf in a Skirt, and before he knew it this joke turned into reality! So instead of just playing a round of Golf in a Skirt at a quiet time at his local golf club, he decided to make a proper event out of it and be a real success for the Charity.

Date: Sunday 5th December 2010

Venue: Astbury Hall, West Midlands, England. One of the most exclusive Golf courses in the UK, recently designed and built to the highest standards. Set in the heart of the Severn Valley, surrounded by Shropshire’s uppermost beautiful and dramatic countryside.

Competition: 18 hole Team competition. 4 players per team, 2 best scores to count on each hole. Stableford, full handicap (max handicaps-24 men, 36 women)

Nearest the pin prize on the 18th Hole, and there will be a longest drive competition. And of course there will be a special prize for the winning team.

Entry will be limited to 24 teams. Team entry will cost £200 per team (Only £50 per player) For any team members that wear a Skirt the organisers will reward that team with 1 extra point to their final team score. That’s 4 points if you all wear Skirts!

Please contact jon@jonathangidney.com if you would like to enter a team. If you are keen to play you will need to act fast, there has been a lot of interest!!!

Spectators are more than welcome, and they will be encouraged to compete in a putting competition, and a longest drive competition that will be running throughout the day.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase on the day and there will be Press/Media/TV at the event.

SKYCADDIE’S CHRISTMAS GIFT IS GOLF AT DE VERE

Two of golf’s best-known brands have combined to create the perfect Christmas present for golfers in the UK.

The offer – buy a SkyCaddie and receive a free fourball at a DeVere golf course – applies to the full SkyCaddie range, including SG2.5 and the new SGX.

The free voucher gives SkyCaddie buyers up to £320 worth of green fees at De Vere.

Inside their SkyCaddie box golfers will find a De Vere Golf fourball voucher, valid at ten of the leading hotel operator’s exclusive venues in the UK at any time before March 31st 2011.

The promotion covers fourteen of De Vere’s sixteen UK golf courses, including all courses at Slaley Hall, Heron’s Reach, Oulton Hall, Mottram Hall, Carden Park, Wychwood Park, Belton Woods, Dunston Hall, Staverton Park and Wokefield Park, with only Cameron House at Loch Lomond unavailable in the offer.

All De Vere golf courses have been surveyed on foot by SkyCaddie’s professional mapping team. SkyCaddie is the only rangefinder to use highly accurate survey-grade equipment to measure dozens of critical target points on every hole, giving golfers unbeatable information on over 2,600 golf courses in the UK. Less than 2% of the UK’s courses are as yet un-mapped by SkyCaddie.

During the promotion SkyCaddie buyers will also receive an invitation to join the new De Vere Club, which for just £295 gives golfers membership of all eleven De Vere golf clubs in the UK on a points-based system. With a round of golf starting at just 2 points, and with 100 De Vere points included in their Membership, De Vere Club members have plenty of choice and can also redeem their points by inviting friends to play with them. The De Vere Club was launched by the Club’s Captain Peter Alliss in spring 2010.

“We think this is the ideal Christmas present for a golfer this year” said SkyCaddie’s Jacqui Hitchcock. “De Vere is a wonderful brand which golfers love: their unrivalled collection of golf courses contains everything a golfer could want, and this promotion will see thousands of SkyCaddie customers and their friends visit De Vere venues before the end of March.”

De Vere’s Daniel Hodson said: “We like to align ourselves with forward-thinking brands, and SkyCaddie is the clear industry leader in their market. We think that this deal will be very popular with golfers, and we look forward to an extended relationship with SkyCaddie.”

Walker is King of the Castle

Gtour Aphrodite Hills Open at The Manor House Golf Club (Castle Combe) on Friday 15th October.

The event was won by Gary Walker (4) whose late season form has seen him shoot up the Order of Merit leader board and into contention for the top spot.

A winner earlier in the year at Slaley Hall on top of multiple top-three finishes, Walker was a worthy winner and he was delighted with his prize:

“To win this event and the Holiday was just the topping on what was another fantastic day. I am really looking forward to the trip to Aphrodite Hills and sampling some of that Cypriot hospitality.

“My thanks go to Andreas from Aphrodite Hills for putting up such a fantastic prize and to Colin and Simon for yet another brilliant day and of course all of the other players who make up this Tour.”

The 5* golf resort in Paphos, Cyprus is a true golfers paradise and one of the tours sponsors that provided one of the best prizes of the year.

Business Development Director, Andreas Vasiliou was on hand to present the prize.

“I was so happy that I was able to be personally present at The Manor House Golf Club and meet the Gtour players.”

“Congratulations to all who took part and I was delighted to present the winner the prize of 3 nights and 2 rounds of golf at Aphrodite Hills Resort, Cyprus.”

The day, which is one of the highlights on the tours calendar couldn’t have gone much better. The weather was fine and the course was in fantastic shape with the undulating dips giving players a tough test all day.

Tour director Colin Astbury couldn’t praise the course enough:

“It was very fitting to hold the Gtour Aphrodite hills Open at Manor House Castle Combe. The course, one of the UK's top 100 is set in very beautiful surroundings with the rise and fall between tee and green on many of the holes mirroring what would be in store for the eventual winner.”

“2010 has been a fantastic year for the tour.” He added, “Our congratulations go to Gary on his win, hopefully his holiday next year doesn't clash with any of the 2011 tour dates.”

The tour moves to De Vere Staverton Park for the final event of the year on Saturday 13 November. With several players still in with a chance to win the Order of Merit it will certainly be a day not to be missed.

For a chance to sample what it is like to be involved in the closest thing to be being on Tour visit www.gtour.co.uk to get registered for the last event of 2010.

HEATH CLINCHES THE BIGGEST EVENT IN THE EUROPRO TOUR SEASON

JAMES Heath has won the biggest event in the 2010 PGA EuroPro Tour season after triumphing in a dramatic three-way play-off.

After three rounds of the Marfin Popular Bank EuroPro Tour Championship, Heath, Kevin Harper (East Devon) and Lawrence Dodd were all tied on seven-under.

However, Heath won the play-off at Aphrodite Hills Golf in Paphos, Cyprus to collect the €20,000 winner’s prize and also advance to next season’s Challenge Tour.

Elsewhere, Scotland’s Craig Lee (Aspire Golf Centre) made a late surge to finish in tied fourth after being well down the leaderboard on the opening day.

He shot a first round total of seven-over 77, followed that with a five-under 65 on Friday and produced a sensational round of eight-under 62 on Saturday.

Lee was joined in fourth place by Matt Allen and George Woolgar, who also finished on six-under for the tournament.

Gareth Shaw came seventh on five-under, while Robert Steele (Kenilworth / Forest of Arden), Gareth Davies (Abbeydale GC) and Scott Henry (The Carrick on Loch Lomond) shared eighth place.

Ireland’s Brendan McCarroll had a two-shot lead going into the final day but a final day round of five-over ended his hopes and saw him finish in tied 11th.

He was joined on three-under by Tim Rice and Nicky Harris, an early leader on the opening day.

This was the final event of the season and critical as this would decide who qualified for next season’s Challenge Tour and be only one step away from joining the golfing elite on the Challenge Tour.

In previous seasons, the players who finished the campaign in the top five on the EuroPro Tour Order of Merit advanced to the Challenge Tour.

However, seven players from the 2010 EuroPro Tour will move up to the Challenge Tour. Daniel Gaunt (winner of a Challenge Tour event earlier in the year) and Craig Lee (guaranteed a place in the top 80 of the Challenge Tour money list) had already secured their spots at the higher level.

As they both finished inside the top five on the EuroPro Tour Order of Merit, that meant the men finished sixth and seventh have also advanced.

So the seven players advancing to next season’s Challenge Tour are Daniel Gaunt, Matthew Evans, James Hepworth, James Heath, Craig Lee, Nick McCarthy and Ian Keenan.

McCARROLL LEADS THE RACE FOR €20,000

IRISHMAN Brendan McCarroll is leading the race for the €20,000 top prize in the biggest event in the PGA EuroPro Tour season.

McCarroll, 24, shot the best round of the second day in the Marfin Popular Bank EuroPro Tour Championship at Aphrodite Hills Golf in Paphos, Cyprus.

Birdies at the first, fifth, sixth, seventh, tenth, 14th, 15th and 18th, along with a bogey at the 13th, helped McCarroll to a score of seven-under to take him to eight-under for the tournament.

A victory in Cyprus could catapult McCarroll to the Challenge Tour, depending on how his nearest rivals perform.

McCarroll has been a regular on the EuroPro tour in the last three seasons after he successfully battled through the 2007 Qualifying School.

His highest finish so far came in July when he was tied second at Stoke-by-Nayland, although he also failed to make the cut six times in 2010.

Going into the final day on Saturday, McCarroll holds a two-shot lead over George Woolgar, who is one ahead of Scott Henry and Stuart Archibald in tied third.

Henry ended well with birdies at the 17th and 18th, Woolgar claimed an eagle at the par-five sixth, while Archibald registered an eagle of his own on the par-five 18th.

At the start of the second day, three men – Nicky Harris, James Hepworth and Jeremy Kavanagh – were tied in first place but they all fell down the leaderboard.

Harris went round in a level-par round and sits tied fifth, Hepworth has fallen to tied 17th, while double bogeys at the third and 14th from Kavanagh left him in tied 26th.

The event, which only features players from the top 60 of the money list from the regular season, concludes on Saturday with the competitors playing their third and final round.

In previous seasons, the players who finish the campaign in the top five on the EPT Order of Merit advance to the Challenge Tour.

However, seven players from the 2010 EuroPro Tour will move up to the Challenge Tour. Daniel Gaunt (winner of a Challenge Tour event earlier in the year) and Craig Lee (guaranteed a place in the top 80 of the Challenge Tour money list) have already secured their spots at the higher level.

Matthew Evans and James Hepworth are guaranteed high finishes on the EPT money list so three spots are still up for grabs in what promises to be a hotly-contested final round in Cyprus.
