LATE RUN TAKES MOUL TO FIRST DAY LEAD IN ESSEX

ESSEX-BASED Jamie Moul is in front after day one of the The Stoke-by-Nayland Championship 2010.

Pre-tournament betting favourite Moul, 25, is a regular on the Challenge Tour and on Sunday finished tied fifth in one of their events - the Fred Olsen Challenge De Espana.

He maintained that good form in this PGA EuroPro Tour competition as his first round score of eight-under was the best of the day.

After six holes, Moul was at level par but a stunning run of eight birdies in ten holes saw him leapfrog clubhouse leader Graeme Clark.

However, Clark is still in contention for more success on the PGA EuroPro Tour, which would be his fifth victory on the tour in four seasons after shooting an opening round score of seven-under.

Birdies on five of the first seven holes along with further ones at the 12th, 14th and 15th helped him to an early lead, although he later dropped a shot at the 17th.

Clark (Doncaster GC) has enjoyed great success on the tour having won at Marriott Tudor Park in August 2009 and collecting three victories during 2007 as he finished top of the Order of Merit.

With £10,000 going to the winner, a victory here could catapult Clark up the Order of Merit as he bids to reclaim a place on the Challenge Tour after an unsuccessful season there in 2008.

Scotland’s Paul Doherty (Vale Hotel) had an eventful day as nine birdies and three bogeys left him on six-under and in third place.

James Busby (The Shropshire), Neil Walker (Rotherham Golf Club) and Ireland’s Brendan McCarroll (JFG Acadamie) are all a shot further back on five-under.

Order of Merit leader Daniel Gaunt is not in action this week on the EuroPro Tour so a good week from one of his nearest challengers could see a change at the top of the money list.

Ian Keenan (Royal Liverpool), a winner at Castle Dargan earlier this month, is well-placed as he is one of a host of golfers on four-under.

Others on the same mark include Michael Lowe (Wentworth), Michael Collins (foreireland.com), George Woolgar (capitalservices.com), Colin Goudie (seeitnowsports.com) and James Freeman (Worksop GC).

Robert Steele, who won at Burhill Golf Club earlier in the season, needs a stunning second round if he is to make the cut.

He endured a miserable day as double bogeys at the fourth and 17th, along with a triple-bogey seven at the par-four sixth, left him on seven-under, 14 shots behind Clark.

The second round starts at 7.30am on Wednesday and at the end of which the top 50 players plus ties will qualify for the final round on Thursday.

CLARK AIMS FOR FIFTH TOUR WIN IN FOUR SEASONS

GRAEME Clark is on course for more success on the PGA EuroPro Tour as he leads on day one of The Stoke-by-Nayland Championship 2010.

Clark, 33, is looking for his fifth victory on the tour in four seasons after shooting an opening round score of seven-under at the Essex course.

Scotland’s Paul Doherty (Vale Hotel) had an eventful day as nine birdies and three bogeys left him on six-under and in second place.

He endured a miserable day as double bogeys at the fourth and 17th, along with a triple-bogey seven at the par-four sixth, left him on seven-over, 14 shots behind Clark.

The second round starts at 7.30am on Wednesday and at the end of which the top 50 players plus ties will qualify for the final round on Thursday.

HEPWORTH HOLDS NERVE TO CLAIM DRAMATIC PLAY-OFF WIN

JAMES Hepworth has held his nerve to claim his first ever victory on the PGA EuroPro Tour.

Hepworth, 35, edged out Daniel Gaunt in the first play-off hole to claim £10,000 and win the Galgorm Castle Northern Ireland PGA EuroPro Tour Open.

More than 1,000 spectators watched the last round and they were treated to great entertainment as it was a tight ending between Gaunt and overnight leader Hepworth.

Hepworth had been in front since the end of the opening day but came up with his worst round of the competition on Friday.

A dropped shot at the sixth looked to have proved costly, but there was late drama as Hepworth birdied the last to force a play-off.

He then fired a birdie four at the first extra hole, while Australian Gaunt, the Order of Merit leader, could only claim a five.

“I was quite focused and did the business. I really enjoyed it,” said 35-year-old Hepworth.

“I was a bit relieved to actually be in the play-off and at the start of the day all of the eyes were on me as everybody wanted me to slip up but it was alright in the end.

“It has brought my own self-belief back as in the last few years I had a lost a bit of interest but I’ve worked hard and it’s paid off.

“The goal at the start of the season was to get on to the Challenge Tour and this victory means I’ve now got a chance of doing that.”

Gaunt had been three shots behind at the start of the day but his second place finish means he collects £5,000 and extends his lead at the top of the Order of Merit.

Matt Allen claimed his third top ten finish of the month as he produced his best round of the tournament on Friday.

His last day score of 66 left him in tied third on -11 and comes after finishes of tied second at Longhirst Hall and tied ninth last week at Bovey Castle.

He was joined in third place by England’s Gareth Shaw, competing in his first EuroPro Tour event of the season, as an eagle on the par-five third helped him to -11.

Ian Keenan continued his fine start to the campaign by ending in tied third for his fourth top 12 finish of 2010.

Jonathan Caldwell (Clandeyboye) was an early leader on day one but a poor second round saw his title hopes evaporate.

However, he ended the tournament well with a score of five-under on day three, aided by an eagle on the third to end in tied sixth.

Caldwell was joined in tied sixth by last week’s winner Craig Lee, England pair Gary Wolstenholme and James Webber and Ireland’s Michael Collins.

Ritchie pickings

RITCHIE Blundell moved into contention in the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit with victory in the Hulbert Trophy at Manchester.

But the Hillside man only got the verdict on a lower second round after his three-under-par total had been matched by Ian Kenwright.

Blundell, a shot behind his Haydock Park adversary after opening with a 71, followed up with 70 which included an eagle at the 538-yard second and three birdies in the next five holes.

With most of the leading players competing in the Brabazon Trophy at Royal Liverpool, Blundell lifted himself into a share for fourth place in the merit alongside Huyton & Prescot’s John Carroll whose Lancashire team-mate James Robinson, from Southport & Ainsdale, maintained his 115 points advantage.

HEPWORTH EXTENDS HIS LEAD GOING INTO FINAL DAY

JAMES Hepworth has extended his lead in Northern Ireland as he closed in on the £10,000 top prize in the latest PGA EuroPro Tour event.

Hepworth (Ilkley GC) held a one-shot advantage going into Thursday’s play in the Galgorm Castle Northern Ireland PGA EuroPro Tour Open.

But he performed well for the second day running as birdies at the second, third, sixth and tenth saw him go round in four-under, taking his total to -13.

His nearest challenger is James Webber (Three Rivers Golf Club), who went round in three-under and is currently on ten-under for the competition.

However, Webber could live to regret his three dropped shots as he claimed bogeys at the fifth, sixth and 17th.

Australian Daniel Gaunt has continued his fantastic start to the 2010 campaign and he is again in contention to claim a victory.

He won the opening tournament of the season at Wensum Valley in Norfolk, finished tied second after a five-hole play-off at Longhirst Hall and ended seventh at Bovey Castle last week.

Gaunt is likely to pick up more money from this event as a fine round, which included an eagle at the par five third, leaves him vying for the title.

He is joined in third position by Ireland’s Barrie Trainor (Team Ireland Golf), who had started the day in second but dropped shots at each of the opening two holes.

Another Irish golfer, Michael Collins (www.foreireland.com), is among a handful of players on eight-under, while Ian Keenan will still be confident of glory.

There are a host of players on seven-under, including Craig Lee (Aspire Golf Centre), a winner last week at Bovey Castle in Devon.

Gary Wolstenholme (Carus Green GC) and Graeme Clark (Doncaster GC) have maintained their record of making the cut at every EuroPro Tour event they have played in this season.

The top 50 players plus ties will advance to the third round that will be played on Friday.

HEPWORTH ONE-SHOT AHEAD AFTER DAY ONE IN NORTHERN IRELAND

James Hepworth leads the way on the opening day of the latest event on the PGA EuroPro Tour.

Day one of the Galgorm Castle Northern Ireland PGA EuroPro Tour Open saw a host of low scores, with Hepworth’s nine-under the best.

Hepworth (Ilkley GC) finished tied seventh in the opening event in Norfolk in April and an eagle here on the third helped him to a one-shot lead over Ireland’s Barrie Trainor.

James Webber (Three Rivers Golf Club) is two shots off the lead on seven-under, while Jonathan Caldwell, is one of a number of players on six-under.

He dropped a shot at the fifth but birdies on holes three, four, eight, nine, ten, 16 and 17 saw him stay in contention for the £10,000 top prize.

Caldwell, a member of the Walker Cup team in 2007 alongside Rory McIlroy, normally plays on the Challenge Tour, where he is currently 61st on their Order of Merit.

This is the first EuroPro tour event Caldwell (Clandeyboye) has taken part in this season and he is well placed in the event, which concludes on Friday.

Ireland’s Michael Collins is also in the top ten, while Mark Campbell, Dale Marmion and Ian Keenan all went round in five-under, despite all claiming bogeys on the opening hole.

But Marmion hit five birdies in the last six holes, while Campbell (Team Ireland Golf) claimed three in the last five with Keenan ending with four birdies in the last five holes.

Keenan, who triumphed at Castle Dargan earlier this month, is currently third in the Order of Merit but could move top if he performs well in the rest of the tournament.

A host of players are on four-under, including Irish pair Shane Franklin and Paul O’Hanlon and England’s Alex Belt and Paul Maddy.

Australian Daniel Gaunt is the tour leader at the moment but could not capitalise on a fine start with three successive birdies and he sits six shots behind Hepworth.

ADAM Andrews continued his impressive start to the season with a five stroke victory in the Calvert Trophy at Ashton & Lea.

The 19-year-old 2008 Lancashire Boys’ champion also became a first-time Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit winner as he assembled rounds of 68 and 67 for a seven-under-par total.

Andrews, a plus one player from Ashton-in-Makerfield who won the Faldo Series at West Lancs last month, made his move with an eagle at the 474-yard ninth in the morning to cancel out two early bogeys.

He added three more birdies then rolled in another six in the second round as Whitefield’s Jay McGarvey, with a brace of 70s, finished runner-up.

Sixth-placed Mark Young, from Longridge, leapfrogged into second spot in the merit he has claimed twice in three years, trailing S&A’s James Robinson by 65 points.

LEE STORMS TO FINE VICTORY ON PGA EUROPRO TOUR

CRAIG Lee has stormed to victory in the latest PGA EuroPro Tour event – The Dunlop Masters.

Scotsman Lee, 33, claimed the £10,000 winner’s prize at Bovey Castle in Devon as he finished six shots ahead of England’s Steve Uzzell (Hornsea GC).

Lee trailed by three shots after the first round on Wednesday before a score of seven-under on Thursday gave him a share of the lead going into the last day.

But he sprinted towards glory on Friday with a breathtaking performance that included birdies on seven of the first 11 holes and an eagle on the par-five 12th.

This victory for Lee (Aspire Golf Club) completes a remarkable month that also saw him perform well at the flagship event on the European Tour – the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Lee had qualified for this by finishing top of the Scottish Order of Merit in 2009 and his first round at Wentworth saw him finish in tied 19th, ahead of star players including Lee Westwood, Paul Casey and Padraig Harrington.

He eventually dropped down the leaderboard but still made the cut and finished in the top 70 before maintaining his good form at Bovey Castle this week.

Three players – Andrew Johnston (North Middlesex), James Busby (The Shropshire) and Sean Doherty (Bury GC) – all finished in tied third on 11-under.

Nick McCarthy (Moortown) was, for the second event running, left rueing his worst round of the tournament on the third day and as a result he ended in sixth place.

Australian Daniel Gaunt keeps his position at the top of the EuroPro Tour Order of Merit as he claimed his third top ten finish of the season.

Graham Clark (Doncaster GC) had shared the lead on the opening day but produced his worst round of the week with a round of seven-over that left him well off the pace.

LEE HITS FORM AT RIGHT TIME IN DEVON

CRAIG Lee has produced the best round of the Dunlop Masters to be in contention for the £10,000 winner’s prize.

Lee (Aspire Golf Centre) fired a score of seven-under on day two to take the lead in the latest PGA EuroPro Tour at Bovey Castle in Devon.

Scotsman Lee started the tournament poorly with a double bogey on his first hole yesterday before recovering to end the first day on two-under.

But he then performed much better on Thursday with a sensational front nine that saw him claim birdies on seven of the first nine holes.

However, he does not have an outright lead as Sean Doherty (Bury GC) is also on nine-under after a flawless round included birdies at holes two, three, nine, ten, 11 and 12.

Moortown’s Nick McCarthy was well placed going into the final day last week at Longhirst Hall before his hopes ended with a poor third round.

But a score of four-under, his second in two days, has again put him in contention and he is currently one shot behind Lee and Doherty on eight-under.

Graham Clark (Doncaster GC) and Matt Allen started the day in joint first position after both going round in five-under on Wednesday.

However, both plummeted down the leaderboard as their title hopes appeared to have faded.

Clark claimed four bogeys on the opening ten holes, while Allen was left rueing double bogeys at the fifth and 12th.

Order of merit leader Daniel Gaunt is on course for another top ten finish as he sits on four-under after a round of three-under on Thursday.

The final day is on Friday where the top 50 players plus ties will play a final round.

Full scores and information can be found from the official website www.europrotour.com.

ALLEN AND CLARK SHARE THE LEAD AT BOVEY CASTLE

Matt Allen and Graham Clark share the lead on the opening day of the latest event in the PGA EuroPro Tour season.

The pair both shot five-under at the Dunlop Classic at Bovey Castle in Devon as they bid for the £10,000 top prize.

Allen has been in good form recently and came tied second last week after eventually losing out to Stuart Archibald in a five-hole play-off at Longhirst Hall.

Birdies at 2, 4, 8, 12, 15 and 16, along with a bogey at the fifth, have put Allen in a good position, while 2007 Order of Merit champion Clark (Doncaster GC) is also in contention for the glory.

James Busby (The Shropshire), a top ten finisher at Castle Dargan earlier this month, would have joined Allen and Clark in the lead but bogeyed the par-five last.

Burhill runner-up Sean Doherty (Bury GC) is among those on three-under, as is Ben Jones (crownbush.co.uk).

This pair are one shot ahead of last week’s winner Stuart Archibald (claimsjustice.co.uk), who would have been higher up the leaderboard if he had not collected two successive bogeys at the 14th and 15th.

Order of Merit leader Daniel Gaunt is a shot further back on one-under but Justin Evans (Wentworth Club), fifth on the order of merit list, faces a battle to make the cut after a double-bogey on the 12th contributed to a round of two-over.

Castle Dargan winner Ian Keenan (Royal Liverpool) enjoyed a good front nine but bogeys on the 13th and 18th dented his hopes and left him five behind the leaders.

Nick McCarthy (Moortown) led at Longhirst Hall last week and he made a bright start to this event with birdies at the sixth, seventh, 11th and 12th.

To find out full results from the opening day of the Dunlop Classic, please go to www.europrotour.com and click on the ‘Score Updates’ tab on the right-hand side.

Day Two of the three-day competition starts at 6.30am and the top 50 players and ties at the end of the second round will qualify for the final day.

Carroll on song again

JOHN Carroll returned to Wallasey four days after helping Lancashire to a record 30-shot victory in the Northern Counties Championship and this time covered himself in personal glory in the Frank Stableford Open.

He racked up 77 points to leave the rest of the field trailing in his wake as he claimed the title for the second time in three years.

The Huyton and Prescot man bogeyed the first two holes in the opening round but then hit a stunning six birdies on his way to the turn before adding two more on the home stretch.

His 41 points, which equated to five-under-par 67, gave him a healthy lead as he accrued 36 more in a less spectacular second round.

Mere’s Josh Evans was runner-up, seven adrift, on countback from Heswall’s John Little and David Peel, from Stockport. Victory lifted Carroll into 40th place in the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit, 265 points behind Lancashire team-mate James Robinson.

The Southport & Ainsdale England international missed the event along with other leading players in the rankings who were preparing for the Amateur Championship at Muirfield and North Berwick.

ARCHIBALD TRIUMPHS AFTER DRAMATIC THREE-WAY PLAY-OFF

STUART Archibald has claimed a remarkable victory on the PGA EuroPro Tour after winning a dramatic three-way play-off.

Archibald, 25, triumphed at the Dawson and Sanderson Classic at Longhirst Hall in Northumberland as he edged out Daniel Gaunt and Matt Allen.

The trio ended on evens after three rounds and needed five extra play-off holes before Archibald (ClaimsJustice.co.uk) scooped the £10,000 winner’s prize and his first ever EuroPro Tour win.

“This is the biggest moment of my career so far,” said a delighted Archibald, who was seven shots off the lead and in danger of not making the cut after the first day.

“Hopefully I will now get a few invites to the Challenge Tour and get a couple of starts. It means I’m financially set for a couple of seasons so this is the beginning for me.

“The weather on the first day was horrific and I lost my concentration on the first day.

“I hit the ball nicely yesterday but couldn’t putt and they seemed to go in today.

“I knew a score was out there but at the start of today I was just trying to get into the top ten. It’s incredible how you can have a 12-shot difference in your score from two days earlier.”

Basingstoke-based Archibald shot six-over on Wednesday but his fortunes turned round went he round in level par on Thursday before a round of -6, the best round of the week from any player.

An eagle at the par-five 13th was the highlight, but he also made birdies at the third, fifth, seventh, 12th, 16th and 17th.

There was a dramatic ending as Archibald was the clubhouse leader on evens, with Gaunt on the same total and Allen one shot behind as the last group approached the 18th.

But Allen forced a three-way play-off as he held his nerve to birdie the 18th, while Gaunt could only par the same hole.

Gaunt, who stays first in the Order of Merit, had been near the top throughout the competition and started the last day in joint second place.

Nick McCarthy (Moortown) had shared the lead at the end of the first day and had a one-shot lead going into the final day.

He was the only player to have a score under par after Thursday’s play but a horror front 9 on Friday saw his title hopes evaporate.

McCarthy struggled to three double bogeys – on the fourth, sixth and eighth – and also registered a bogey on the fifth as he fell rapidly down the leaderboard.

A number of players enjoyed their best rounds of the competition on the third day with Jason Kelly, Daniel Belch, Brian McElhinney and Brendan McCarroll all going round in three under on Friday.

McCARTHY HOLDS ONE SHOT LEAD GOING INTO LAST DAY AT LONGHIRST HALL

NICK McCarthy has a one shot lead going into the final day of the latest PGA EuroPro Tour event.

McCarthy (Moortown) is on one-under after two of the three days of the Dawson and Sanderson Classic at Longhirst Hall in Northumberland. He is the only man to have a score under par as players have battled against a tough course in the fourth event of the EuroPro Tour season.

At the start of day two, McCarthy was one of three men on one-under and he made a bright start by claiming a birdie at the first. However, he struggled for consistency throughout the rest of his round as he made a further four birdies but also five bogeys.

Australian Daniel Gaunt, who currently heads the Order of Merit, is on level par, along with England’s Matt Allen as both men scored -2 on Thursday. Chris Roake (Buckinghamshire Golf Club) and Scott Herald (Mearns Castle Golf) had started the day in tied first position.

They both dropped down the leaderboard but will still be confident of claiming the £10,000 first prize as Roake is fourth on +1, while Herald is tied eighth on +3. Other contenders include Neil O’Briain (Ireland), George Cowan (Westerhope) and Daniel Rice (Purplegolf.com/Clevedon GC), who are all on two over.

Tim Rice (Limerick) and James Harper (Seaton Carew GC) are both on three over, four shots off the lead. The top 50 players made the cut, which came at ten over par, and they will compete in the final round on Friday.

Among those who did not make the cut were Castle Dargan runner-up Justin Evans and Scotland’s Zack Saltman.

TRICKY DAY ON PGA EUROPRO TOUR AS MANY STRUGGLE

A TOUGH course at Longhirst Hall in Northumberland saw a number of top players struggle on the opening day of the latest PGA EuroPro Tour event.

Low scores were at a premium in the Dawson and Sanderson Classic, the fourth tournament in the 2010 season.

Nick McCarthy (Moortown) was one of only a handful of golfers who went round under par. He claimed birdies at the seventh, 12th and 15th that helped him to an early lead, but bogeys at the last two holes ruined his hard work.

McCarthy, has made the cut at two events so far this season and was in the top 30 of the 2009 Order of Merit after two ten finishes – at Wychwood Park and Fairmont St Andrews.

He will start day two on one-under, while Scott Herald (Mearns Castle Golf) and Chris Roake (Buckinghamshire Golf Club) are both on the same total.

It was a mixed day for Australian Daniel Gaunt, who started the event at the top of the Order of Merit.

Gaunt ended day one on two-over par despite birdies at the second, 12th and 18th. However, bogeys at the eighth, ninth and 15th along with a double bogey six on the par-four fourth proved costly.

Ian Keenan (Royal Liverpool) won last week’s tournament at Castle Dargan in Ireland and he started brightly today with three birdies in his first six holes.

However, his round ended badly as a double-bogey on the par-four eighth was later followed by a disastrous 14th when he took six shots on the par-three.

Justin Evans (Wentworth Club) came second at Castle Dargan but needs a miracle to make the cut after a shocking round.

Three double bogeys and a triple bogey on the fourth left Evans on +14 after 15 holes as he was heading for one of the worst scores of the day.

For all the scores from the opening day of the PGA EuroPro Tour, please go to www.europrotour.com and then click on ‘Score Updates’ on the right-hand side.

Early leaders on day one (par 71)
=1. Nick McCarthy (England) (Moortown) – 1 70
=1. Scott Herald (Mearns Castle Golf) – 1 70
=1. Chris Roake (Buckinghamshire GC) -1 70

Alex plays another belter

ALEX Belt continued his hot streak when he won the Brough Classic by a shot.

The 24-year-old 2008 PGA North Region champion has finished fourth in a Europro tournament and claimed top prize in two pro-ams in the past couple of weeks.

And he carried his form to Humberside where he fired 67 and 65 for a four-under-par total to edge out first round leader Nick Ludwell, from Selby.

Belt, also winner of the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Young Open PGA Professional Championship title last year, was Mr Consistency on the first day as he birdied the opening hole then parred the rest.

He dropped his only shot in the second round, at the 12th, but more than compensated with an eagle at the third and two birdies.

DETAILS (Par=68): 132 Alex Belt (Bridlington Links) 67 65; 133 Nick Ludwell (Selby) 65 68; 135 John Wells (Cherry Burton) 66 68; 136 Steve Parry (unatt) 69 67, Lee Rooke (Vale of LLangollen) 66 70; 137 David Shacklady (Mossock Hall) 69 68, David Smith (Swinton Park) 67 70, James Drinkall (Allenthorpe Park) 66 71, Paul Bradshaw (Boorthferry) 70 67, Paul Carman (Huddersfield) 71 69.

Daniel’s day after scare

DANIEL Osbaldeston survived a potential disaster by cancelling out back-to-back bogeys with a pair of successive birdies over the closing seven holes to win the Prestbury Open on his home course.

The 20-year-old signed for an eventful 69 which added to his opening 70, three-under-par all told, was enough to earn him his first Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit victory.

But only just because he only won on a lower second round score after his total had been matched by Hill Valley’s Joe Miller and 16-year-old Daniel Young, a member of the host club, who led the way in the morning with a superb 66.

Miller, who held the clubhouse lead for a long period, produced some dazzling golf - especially during his morning round - when he fired four birdies in five holes from the 8th hole to get himself to five-under par. It could even have been five on the bounce had it not been for a three-putt par on the par five 11th.

With many of the leading players either competing in the St Andrews Links Trophy or Lancashire Amateur Championship, there was no change at the top of the merit where England international James Robinson holds an 80-point advantage over Formby’s Ian Winstanley.

SCORES (Par = 71): 139 Daniel Osbaldeston (Prestbury) 70 69, Joe Miller (Hill Valley) 69 70, Daniel Young (Prestbury) 68 71; 142 Sam Connor (Sandiway) 76 66; Steven Carroll (Hazel Grove) 72 70; 144 Mark Rogers (Hazel Grove) 73 71, Chris Harrison (Sandiway) 71 73, Ed Battye (Dewsbury) 70 74; 145 Martyn Walsh (Styal) 75 70, David Nelson (Northenden) 74 71, Steven Hindle (Ellesmere) 72 73; 146 James Newton (Prestbury) 73 73.

Keenan clinches Castle Dargan victory

Ian shoots 67 in final round in Ireland to win by one!

Ian Keenan said he was proud of a win that was “a long time coming” after a final round 67 gave him a one stroke victory at 11 under par at the Castle Dargan PGA EuroPro Tour event in Sligo.

Keenan (Royal Liverpool) led the tournament after the opening round at six under par, and a second round 70 saw him tee off one stroke behind final round leader Andrew Thorpe.

Three birdies on the front nine saw Keenan seize the initiative as Thorpe dropped an early shot. An eagle at the tenth saw him strengthen his position but he admitted a wobble at the 16th had him worried – before he composed himself to finish one stroke clear of Justin Evans.

“It’s a long time coming to be honest, and at 16 I thought I might have blown it,” said Keenan, who pockets £10,000 for the win. “I had a stinking lie after over-shooting the green and I thought I’d hit a good shot too. But I got away with just the bogey and gathered myself well, and I’m delighted with the win.

“I deserved this though after the way I played from tee to green all week,” said the Hoylake pro. “I said to my roommate that this course was perfect for me and I knew I was playing well. The 65 in the opening round showed that, and the 70 yesterday was good too, but it’s a three-round tournament and there were some great scores out there – look at Paul Maddy’s 64 (second round) – so one low round was never going to be enough.”

“Putting pressure on down the front nine was important but with such a bunched leader board, I couldn’t allow myself to be too distracted as players could come from anywhere to pass you,” said the 34 year-old. “I just stuck to my guns and I’m very proud of that performance.”

Evans (Wentworth Club) was level par after nine holes, with two bogeys swiftly followed by two birdies. It was an eagle at the tenth that kept Evans interested in the trophy, with birdies at 12 and 15 taking him to 11 under, but a bogey at 17 meant he had to settle for second place at ten under.

Daniel Belch took third spot after a fine final round of 65. Belch (Hillside GC) did the damage on the front nine, with three birdies from the fourth followed by another at the eighth. A fifth birdie came at the tenth before his first blip – a bogey at 14. But Belch replied instantly with his sixth and final birdie of the day at the 15th to finish at nine under for the tournament.

The sixth hole was a popular one over the three rounds for all the players, and Irish duo Tim Rice and Paul O’Hanlon both picked up eagles there on the way to finishing tied for fourth place at seven under. Rice (Limerick) picked up five birdies in his four under par 67, while O’Hanlon (Curragh) also eagled the tenth before three bogeys down the back reduced him to a round of 69. Elliot Saltman (Aegon) joined the Irishmen in fourth spot, matching O’Hanlon’s eagle at ten in a one under par round of 70. Younger brother Zack (Aegon) began the day at six under par like Elliot, but shot a 74 to finish back in a tie for 15th at three under.

Thorpe (Peterborough Milton) went into the final round with a one shot lead overnight ahead of playing partner Keenan and eventual runner-up Evans. Thorpe suffered an early blow after bogeying the second hole, but he remained in the hunt at the last thanks to birdies at the sixth, ninth and 15th to sit one stroke behind Keenan at 18. But Thorpe took an eight at the last after finding the water with his tee shot and dropped down to six under for the tournament.

Three players joined Thorpe at seven under – James Busby (The Shropshire) and Brian McElhinney (Team Ireland) both carded 70s while James Freeman (Worksop GC) was level in his final round.

The next event on the PGA EuroPro Tour is the Dawson & Sanderson Classic at Longhirst Hall Golf Course in Northumberland from June 9.

Thorpe snatches final round lead at Castle Dargan

Andrew’s 65 affords him slender advantage in Ireland!

Andrew Thorpe struck a six under par 65 to lead the Castle Dargan PGA EuroPro Tour event by one stroke at eight under par ahead of Friday’s final round in Ireland.

Thorpe (Peterborough Milton) began the day at two under par but for the first time in his career he will go into the final round with a one shot lead over Ian Keenan and Justin Evans after carding five birdies and an eagle in his second round in Sligo.

“I haven’t held an overnight lead as a professional but it’s not something that I’m daunted by,” said Thorpe. “If I do the same things I have been then I will be in with a great chance tomorrow.”

Thorpe started off on the ninth hole with a birdie and made that two at the tenth, moving to the front nine at three under for the day. A fourth birdie at the third was wiped out immediately but his round had a strong finish thanks to an eagle at the sixth – as he did in the opening round – followed by his fifth and final birdie of the day at the seventh.

“It was good to get off to a good start,” said the 23 year-old. “I finished with a double bogey yesterday so to kick-off with two birdies gave me some momentum to build on straight away. The eagle at the sixth was a nice boost to finish with – it’s playing downwind so it’s definitely a hole you can capitalise on and I’m glad I did.”

Overnight leader Keenan (Royal Liverpool) was unable to match his opening round 65 in his second round, carding three birdies and two bogeys in his 70 to sit in a tie for second. Joining Keenan one stroke behind Thorpe is Justin Evans, who carded a fine 66. Beginning at the first, Evans (Wentworth Club) was level through the first four holes before picking up six birdies in eight holes to move to six under – with a bogey at 17 foiling his chances of joining Thorpe at eight under.

Zack Saltman (Aegon) matched Evans’ round to climb into contention at six under par – alongside his older brother Elliot. Starting with five pars, Zack eagled the sixth and tenth holes to shoot up the leader board. Both eagles were followed by bogeys, but three birdies from the 13th means he is hopeful of a good showing in the final round. It could be a great day for the Saltman family as Elliot (Aegon) followed an opening four under par round with a two-under par 69, also eagling the tenth. Graeme Clark and James Freeman join the Scottish brothers in a four-way tie for fourth, with Clark (Doncaster) shooting a round of 68 and Freeman (Worksop GC) one under for the day at 70.

That quartet sit one shot clear of five players at five under – Irish pair Brian McElhinney (Team Ireland) and Paul O’Hanlon (Curragh), English duo James Busby (The Shropshire) and Nicky Harris (Whitefield GC) and Scotsman Scott Henry (The Carrick on Loch Lomond).

Fifty-eight players made the cut at three-over par for the final round in Castle Dargan – live scoring from the final round is available at www.europrotour.com via the Score Updates link, where you can find the full leader board from the opening two rounds of the tournament.

Keenan sets the pace at Castle Dargan

Ian leads at seven under after opening round in Ireland!

Ian Keenan plundered seven birdies in a superb opening round of 65 to lead the PGA EuroPro Tour event at Castle Dargan Golf Club in County Sligo by one stroke at six under.

Keenan (Royal Liverpool) got into his stride straight away with a birdie at the first hole and was three-under par through eight holes. Three birdies from the ninth took him to six under through 11 before his seventh birdie of the day came at the 15th – with a solitary bogey at 17 a minor blemish on a fine start to the third tournament on the Tour.

Kevin McAlpine and James Freeman are Keenan’s closest challengers in second spot at six under par. McAlpine (Alyth GC) bogeyed the second hole but redressed that slip with a birdie at the fourth. He then slipped into gear with an eagle at the sixth – a popular par-five with 12 other players grabbing threes on the day – followed by four birdies. Unfortunately for the former double amateur champion, the end of his round saw a second bogey at the last to see him shoot 66.

Freeman (Worksop GC) recovered from a bogey-bogey start to shoot 66 – picking up pairs of birdies at the third, sixth and ninth with two further birdies at 15 and 17 following a bogey at the 11th.

A cluster of familiar names sit two strokes behind Keenan in fourth spot at four under. Brendan McCarroll began on the ninth hole with a bogey but recovered in fine style with an eagle on the par-five tenth. Three birdies and two bogeys followed before he picked up a second eagle of the day at the sixth for his 67. Robert Hearty (Bromborough) also eagled the sixth in his 67, while Joe Carlisle had a run of five birdies in seven holes to thank for his four under score. Tim Rice (Limerick) and Brian McElhinney (Team Ireland) form an Irish trio with McCarroll in the tie for fourth, joined by Nicky Harris (Whitefield GC) and Elliot Saltman (Aegon).
