It’s Murray – by some distance!

ANDREW Murray clinched the myProGolfer winter series at Fairhaven - while he was practising for a PGA Senior Tour event in South Africa.

The 55-year-old Manchester-born professional, who is attached to Portal, did not have to turn up for the last of four fixtures to claim the merit award after accruing enough points in the first three.

And the 1989 European Open winner should be inspired by the news when he pegs up in the inaugural Berenberg Bank Masters at Fancourt which starts tomorrow (Thursday).

Murray finished 33 points ahead of Mossock Hall’s David Shacklady as Adrian Ambler, from Walton Golf Centre, took third place 92 off the pace.

Ambler fired a four-under-par 68 to share the honours on the final day with Windermere pro Simon Edwards and Ringway’s David Brunton.

LEADING SCORES (Par= 72): 68 Simon Edwards (Windermere), David Brunton (Ringway), Adrian Ambler (Walton Golf Centre); 69 Richard Booth (Hale), David Shacklady (Mossock Hall), Paul Eales (Garstang); 70 Stuart Runcie (Abergele), Tim Maxwell (Knutsford), Andrew Pickering (Carus Green), Matthew Tottey (North Wales).

FINAL ORDER OF MERIT: 662 pts Andrew Murray (Portal); 629 David Shacklady (Mossock Hall); 570 Adrian Ambler (Walton Golf Centre); 400 Chris Hanson (Woodsome Hall), Will Barnes (Garstang); 395 Tim Maxwell (Knutsford); 390 David Brunton (Ringway), 308 Simon Edwards (Windermere), 303 Richard Booth (Hale); 300 Scott Astin (Hesketh).

Martin will take captain’s role in his stride

MARTIN Forster already leads a busy life as a teaching professional at four Northumberland clubs and working for a custom fitting company.

And it’s going to get even more hectic after his appointment today (Thursday) as PGA North Region captain.

But Forster, 44 at the end of the month, is unfazed about a packed schedule which includes a record eight Order of Merit tournaments.

“I’m hoping I can find the time to attend most of them and use my prerogative as captain and enter them, too.

“It’s fantastic to see the region doing so well and I fully endorse the decision to designate three pro-ams as ranking events,” he said, referring to the Poker Stars Manx Classic, the Kerr Investments Cumbria Classic and the Rocar Moores Fixby Classic.

“We had a similar one-pro-one-amateur format last year in the North East and it went down well. It was friendly and the amateurs loved it.”

Father-of-two Forster is also relishing the opportunity to add to his one regional merit victory – the long defunct Woodham Classic in 1992.

“The weather was miserable but I still finished 12-under-par,” he recalled.
He also won the Northumberland and Durham Open at Ramside in 1999 and more than 20 pro-ams. And among his five course records was a seven-under-par 65 at Slaley Hall’s Hunting course in 1995.

“I was pleased with that because it had only just opened,” he said.

Forster, whose brother David is also a professional, started his career as an assistant at Hexham where he played as a boy, 22 years ago.

“When my boss Ian Waugh left in 1992 I got his job,” he added. But with teaching his main forte, he stood down in 2006 to coach at Tynedale, Bellingham, Allendale and Alston. Forster was also NE/NW captain in 2003.

Lancs Open goes regional

THE long-running James Brearley Lancashire Open has been designated as a PGA North Region Order of Merit tournament.

And it will become the eighth ranking event in an already record schedule. Its status has been upgraded to mark 10 years’ sponsorship by the Blackpool-based stock broking and investment management firm and is certain to attract a big field of professionals and leading amateurs to North Shore on August 16-18.

Regional secretary Graham Maly said: “Given the increased support over the years, driven by the excellent prize-fund and superb condition of the course, we are having to stage two pre-qualifying rounds.” The Lancashire Open was instigated as a county fixture in 1973 when it was won by Ryder Cup player Alex Caygill.

Other European Tour professionals to claim the title were Ian Mosey, Andrew Chandler and Denis Durnian. Record number of victories is five by Ged Furey and in recent times David Shacklady has claimed the title on three occasions and Barry Taylor twice including last year. The 36-hole tournament will be followed by a pro-am.

David Hannis, director James Brearley & Sons, commented “The decision to go regional not only helps raise the profile of the event throughout the North but makes it accessible to areas where we have a high concentration of clients.

This is hopefully a further endorsement of how well received the course and facilities at North Shore are viewed by the PGA membership in the area. North Shore secretary John Morris added: “We look forward to introducing our club and its facilities to a wider range of PGA members and amateurs.

It has been very noticeable over the last 10 years how the event has grown in stature and status and is now very much embedded into our club’s calendar.” NB: The pre-qualifiers are at North Shore on July 5 and Normanton on July 21.

Ellis slides in with a 67

MATTHEW Ellis kept his clubs in the locker for most of the winter as he pursued his new hobby of snowboarding.

But the 31-year-old Romiley professional proved he’d lost none of his golfing skills as he put the skids under the rest of a big field in the Mansell Finishes Winter Pro-am Series at Ormskirk.

And he also had to play through a nagging groin pain on his way to a three-under-par 67 to win by a one shot from Swinton Park assistant David Smith and Bolton-based Steve Parry.

“I’m really into snowboarding but it will never replace golf,” said Ellis who even took advantage of the icy winter by hurtling down the 14th fairway at his club.

He dropped a shot at his opening hole, the ninth, but atoned for the lapse with four birdies.

Parry, who runs a golf school at Hart Common, holds a 128-point lead over Davenport assistant Graham Cox in the Order of Merit but with 400 available in the last of the six events at West Lancs on April 7 any of the leading eight players can take the title.

LEADING SCORES (Par= 70): 67 Matthew Ellis (Romiley); 68 Steve Parry (SP Golf School), David Smith (Swinton Park); 69 Graham Cox (Davenport), Andrew Baguley (Leigh), David Shacklady (Mossock Hall); 70 Peter Barber (Didsbury), Joel Rodwell (S&A); 71 Craig Corrigan (Haigh Hall), Jeff Mathews (Mytton Fold), Richard Booth (Hale).

ORDER OF MERIT: 857pts Steve Parry (SP Golf School); 729 Graham Cox (Davenport); 667 Andrew Baguley (Leigh); 595 Barry Taylor (Houghwood); 564 Aran Wainwright (Mid Yorks); 470 Matthew Ellis (Romiley), Adrian Ambler (Walton Golf Centre); 441 Craig Corrigan (Haigh Hall); 391 Ian Ridgway (unatt); 350 Phil Archer (Birchwood).

Mathews is new Lancashire secretary

JEFF Mathews has pledged to tap into what he describes as the “great potential” in Lancashire after taking over as the county PGA secretary.

“We have 142 clubs with some fantastic courses ranging from links to moorland and parkland so I believe we have a lot to offer sponsors,” said the 48-year-old Mytton Fold professional.

“My role is to increase the number of tournaments and pro-ams and I am hoping that many of our 400-plus association members, including seniors, will get involved.

“We are also planning six Order of Merit events but our hands are tied without sponsorship. Pro-ams are particularly great value because they are not only good days out but help clubs to boost revenue at a time when the recession is still biting.”

Former European Tour player Mathews, born in the North East but who has lived in Lancashire for more than 20 years, is a hands-on operator who designed and built a par three course at Samlesbury Driving Range which he recently sold.

“I now have more time to devote to the county and I’m determined to succeed,” he added, revealing that Cheshire players may be invited to some of the events.

Mathews was handed the reins by the Bolton-based PGA North Region who will continue to administer the events as they have since the late 1980s.

Regional secretary Graham Maly said: “Jeff and his committee have a good opportunity to develop the game in Lancashire.”

Race to Alwoodley Gathering Pace

New Yorkshire Matchplay Competition Proving Huge Hit!

With still a month to go before the closing date for the Yorkshire Matchplay Golf Championship Tournament Director, Edward Battye, is already hailing the new event a massive success.

The competition is open to amateur golfers in Yorkshire and allows players to compete in a matchplay format against regional opponents before the winner’s progress to a Grand Final at The Alwoodley Golf Club in Leeds. There is an Individual event and Pairs competition both played on a knockout basis.

2010 is the launch year and the new tournament has been well received by golfers across the county, especially those who do not qualify for the Yorkshire Union of Golf Club’s County Championship – a 36 hole strokeplay competition limited to 165 players with a maximum handicap of six where the top 32 progress to a matchplay stage.

Battye, a two-handicap golfer from Dewsbury District Golf Club, explained, “The comments and feedback since details of the competition were revealed late last year has been amazing. So many people have said that golfers in the county have been crying out for an event like this and are delighted there is now something in place.” He added, “The Yorkshire Union do a fantastic job of promoting the game in the region, especially scratch golf, and I’ve played in their County Championship many times but there has never really been a county-wide event for golfers of all standards... until now!”

Battye (right) concluded, “Golf is such a great game because players of all abilities can compete on a level playing field due to the handicapping system. The appeal of being the best in the county has got a lot of people fired up and it promises to not only be a successful championship but one that is keenly contested.”

One of the reasons for the event being so quick out of the blocks is the effort from golf clubs throughout the region. Praising the clubs Battye said, “Golf Clubs have done a great job in promoting the event to their members, without their help we may well not have had a tournament. I’ve seen several posters up at clubs and they’ve done a brilliant job at informing their members about the event.”

The closing date is the 31st March with the opening round played over 36 holes on a home and away basis. Subsequent matches are contested over 18 holes where a draw will take place for home advantage. The winners of each region; North, East, South & West, will take their place in the climax of the championship at Alwoodley when the semi-final and final will be played on the same day.

More information and entry-forms can be found on the official championship website - www.yorkshirematchplay.com

Following on from last year’s success with the amateurs securing victory over the pro’s, the 2010 SFG Challenge Tour, again in partnership with Srixon, sees amateur golfers from across the country with a handicap of under 10 attempt to qualify for the SFG team, captained by Peter McEvoy (former successful Walker Cup captain), and compete against former Ryder, Walker and Solheim Cup players over two days at the SFG Challenge Tour final.

McEvoy, co- founder of Single Figure Golfer, is looking to retain the trophy after beating the Pro Challenge Team at Celtic Manor and whilst he relished beating the pros he knows they will be out for revenge he said “When we reach Trevose I need to know that my team will comprise players who can play at their best when the pressure is on and that is what is required at this level”

Wainwright walks it

ARAN Wainwright kept his cool as hailstones pounded St Annes Old Links for 40 minutes during the Mansell Finishes Winter Pro-am Series.

And the Mid Yorkshire professional wielded his putter like a magic wand as he conjured an eagle and seven birdies in a nine-under-par 63 to win by four strokes.

He started his round at the fifth, which he birdied, but hit his purple patch on the last four holes where he picked up five shots, including his eagle at the 18th, to leave the rest of a 54-strong field trailing in his wake.

Leigh’s Andrew Baguley and Houghwood assistant Barry Taylor tied second on 67.

LEADING SCORES (Par= 72): 63 Aran Wainwright (Mid Yorkshire); 67 Andrew Baguley (Leigh), Barry Taylor (Houghwood); 68 Tim Maxwell (Knutsford), Richard Booth (Hale); 71 Simon Edwards (Windermere), David Gilford (Portal), David Mansell (Wakefield), John Merry (Haigh Hall), Nick Ludwell (Selby), Andrew Barnett (North Wales GR), Matthew Tottey (North Wales GR), Phil Kelly (St Annes old Links).

HILLSIDE GOLF CLUB IS THE 200TH CLUB TO SIGN UP FOR THE CHALLENGE

The National Golf Club Challenge Reaches 200 Clubs - Hillside Golf Club, Southport

Hillside Golf Club on England's Golf Coast has become the 200th golf club to sign up for the National Golf Club Challenge, which will take place at golf courses throughout the UK on either Saturday 24th or Sunday 25th July 2010, in support of Help for Heroes.

With golf clubs entering on a daily basis, the National Golf Club Challenge is on course to become the largest amateur golf event to take place in the UK.

The Challenge, recently featured on the European Tour website highlighting the fabulous 'Lee Westwood Cup', will bring hundreds of golf clubs, and thousands of golfers together on the same weekend as part of the nationwide charity golf event.

Simon Newland, Hillside Golf Club secretary commented "This is a fabulous event which will benefit a very worthwhile cause and one with which we are proud to be associated. We have worked with Pure Golf Events for the last two years, hosting a charity golf day in aid of Help for Heroes, and it wasn't a difficult decision to lend our name to The National Golf Club Challenge. We will do everything we can to make the challenge a wonderful success for our members and Help for Heroes".

Hillside Golf Club is highly regarded as one of the finest championship courses in the British Isles not to have staged an Open Championship and a 'must play' course for any golfer. With a spectacular setting in the heart of England's Golf Coast, Hillside offers stunning golf for all levels of golfers and has in the opinion of many probably one of the best back nines in British Golf, a view shared by some of the greatest including Greg Norman.

Stacey Jeffries, Event Director commented, "The Challenge is growing fast; it wasn't that long ago we passed 100 clubs. To reach 200 golf clubs in such a short period shows the generosity of the British golfing community as they come together to help raise funds for our wounded armed forces. A generosity typified by clubs like Hillside."

The National Golf Club Challenge, to be held on 24th and 25th July 2010, will give golfers up and down the country the opportunity to compete for some outstanding prizes - including golfing holidays to Egypt - and the right to call themselves "The 2010 National Golf Club Challenge Champions" winning the stunning 'Lee Westwood Cup'.

The format for the National Golf Club Challenge is simple; the Challenge will coincide with each participating golf club's monthly stableford event, with each club turning the day into their own charity golf event, raising much needed funds for Help for Heroes.

The competing clubs will submit their aggregate scores from their 10 best scoring players. This will determine the top 6 golf clubs against standard scratch, who will then be invited to compete in the National Final.

The Grand Final, sponsored by YourGolfTravel.com, will be the conclusion of the 2010 National Golf Club Challenge. The two day event - hosted by The Belfry, one of the world's leading golf resorts, and four times host to the Ryder Cup - will be a superb grand final, featuring a practice day, golf clinic, overnight accommodation, the final competition and a gala dinner, including guest speakers and the prize presentations.
