Smart Alex outguns the pros to win Open title

RINGWAY amateur Alex Hogben upstaged the professionals when he won the Cheshire and North Wales Open at rain-lashed Stockport.

He racked up seven birdies, three in row from the fifth hole, for a four-under-par 67 in an event reduced to one round because of the conditions.

Hogben was a shot in front of Davenport assistant Graham Cox, and Sale's Gareth Jones.

And it was his second success in four days after winning the Rocar Moor's Classic pro-am at Huddersfield with Ashton-under-Lyne's James Salt.

DETAILS: 67 Alex Hogben (Ringway); 68 Gareth Jones (Sandiway), Graham Cox (Davenport).
