Miller is the Master of Moortown

Report from the Moortown Masters, Sunday 12th September 2010 and the Yorkshire Order of Merit final round.

As many will know Moortown Golf Club, played from the Championship tees, is a course to be reckoned with on any day, add blustery winds and you have a challenge for any golfer.

This was demonstrated during this year’s Moortown Masters as the conditions saw the round 1 competition standard scratch rise to a staggering 5 over par, demonstrating the difficulty of the days task.

The first 18 holes saw Jamie Miller (Fulford) shoot the best opening round of 71, with David Houlding (Moortown) and Chris Nichol (Waterton Park) both one shot adrift with impressive opening rounds of 72.

As conditions showed no sign of improving in the afternoon scoring continued to very difficult. The two best rounds of 71 in the afternoon were posted by Moortown’s Nigel Sweet and Scot Hartley of Low Laithes.

As many of the morning leaders stumbled it was the solid relentless game of Miller (pictured above) who posted a second round score of 72 to take the Moortown Masters title.

As ever the Moortown Masters is the concluding round of the Yorkshire Order of Merit. Roger Roper (Wike) was the OOM leader coming into the final event with a firm 179 point lead.

Despite a late surge from Miller for the crown, Roper was able to hold on to take the title with his 5th place finish, concluding a very impressive season.
