PAUL Kinnear is making a habit of close finishes. Last week he came up on the rails with a birdie on the last to win the Mere Trophy.
And he followed up with two eagles, sandwiched between a brace of bogeys, in the final four holes to clinch the Silver Goblet at Royal Birkdale.
The Formby youngster, last year’s Lancashire Boys’ champion, led by two shots after a first round 70 despite a double bogey at the sixth.
He then made sure of victory by four shots over Richie Blundell with an adventurous closing nine holes which contained only two pars as he posted a 72 for two-under total.
Kinnear moved into fifth place in the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit but his late burst of form has come too late for him to challenge for the title.
Blundell, from Hillside, gained ground on leader Mark Young by denying him second spot on countback but as the Longridge reached 1,000 points he trails him by 205 with four events remaining.
Lancashire champion Sean Towndrow, from S&A, is third 490 off the pace with Ashton-in-Makerfield’s Adam Andrews 100 further back.
