NOT even getting caught in a torrential downpour on the last hole could dampen the spirits of David Shacklady as he stayed in the hunt for the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship.
The Mossock Hall settled for a level par 72 to sit three shots of the pace in a share of second place behind leader Stuart Little who is nine under for the tournament.
Shacklady dropped a shot at the second but hit back with birdies on six, seven, 10 and 14. Further bogeys at eight, 15 and 18 cancelled those out but the Ormskirk-based player is revelling in the experience of challenging for the £90,000 event which is also supported by Peugeot and MPI Financial Services.
"I'm loving it, 72-hole golf on a tough golf course against the best players we've got so if you can't enjoy that you might as well give up. I'm thrilled to be in the mix," he said.
"I hit it in the water on 11 again, twice off the tee, but each time I've made par which is pleasing and gives you momentum."
Shacklady, out in the last group of the day, bogeyed the last after the heavens opened and his approach to the uphill 18th pitched into the bunker.
"It just came out like a rocket," he said. "I hit a good bunker shot but missed it from five feet , it was never on line to be fair but I just wanted to get off, it was hammering down with rain.
"Five minutes earlier from where I was I would have been thinking about three. That's just the way it goes.
"Overall, I've saved a few, made a few birdies, and I'm still tied second. You can get it going around here and I'm rolling the ball lovely. I just need to may be hit a few closer."
