JOE Senior dusted down his clubs and swept to a six-under-par 65 for a share of the first round lead in the James Brearley Lancashire Open at Blackpool North Shore.
The Heysham professional has spent most of the year running demo days for an equipment firm and kept his swing in shape through occasional visit to the driving range.
“I was too busy to play,” said the 27year-old as he racked up an eagle and five birdies as his score was match by Luton-based Paul Simpson who is playing on a sponsor’s invitation.
“This is only my second outing of the season but I drove well and that was the key,” said Senior who proved he’s lost none of his competitive edge on a course where he shot a record 62 in 2005, a mark shared by triple winner David Shacklady, from Mossock Hall.
Starting his round from the 10th, he rolled in three birdies on his way to the turn, lamenting a three-putt bogey from 12 feet at the 16th, before striking a rescue club to the heart of the third green for his eagle then picking up two more shots at the seventh and eighth.
Simpson, 41, who also took an extended break from the game until this year, reeled off seven birdies as Swinton Park’s David Smith, the 2006 winner, grabbed a brace of eagles to sit one off the pace.
DETAILS (Par 71): 65 Joe Senior (Heysham), Paul Simpson (Luton Hoo); 66 David Smith (Swinton Park); 67 Mike Nesbit (Westerhope), Paul Grannell (Vale Royal Abbey), Mike Hollingworth (Denton); 68 David Wilcock (Gathurst), John O’Neill (Huyton & Prescot), Lee Rooke (Vale of Llangollen), Ian Gregory (Bolton), Richard Booth (Hale), Tim Maxwell (Knutsford), John Cheetham (Marriott Worsley Park); 69 Mark Sheppard (Darland), Joseph Feather (Leeds Golf Centre), Jon Cheetham (Gatley), Tom Bolton (Hazel Grove), Chris Crowder (Lee Park), Paul Carmen (Huddersfield), Graham Cox (Davenport), David Shacklady (Mossock Hall), Trevor Newsham (Heysham).
