Last hole birdie seals Mere Trophy for Paul

PAUL Kinnear claimed his first Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit title when he beat his Formby clubmate James Bolton on countback in the Mere Trophy.

The 2009 Lancashire Boys’ champion posted two rounds of 71 for a level par total as Bolton followed up his opening 69 with 73.

A birdie on the final hole proved crucial for Kinnear on a day Mark Young increased his merit lead to 260 points with seven events remaining over S&A’s Sean Towndrow who succeeded him as county champion earlier this season.
