Ian’s a gem in Astbury Jewel

LANCASHIRE player Ian Kenwright put on a sparkling performance to win the Astbury Jewel and move into seventh place in the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit.

The Haydock Park youngster opened with a 69 then stepped up a gear in the second round which he started by birdying the first three holes on his way to a 66 and a seven-under-par total.

Steve Bryan, from Bolton Old Links, was two back and the same margin in front of Ellesmere’s Steve Hindle.

Meanwhile, Lancashire County champion Sean Towndrow, winner of the Caldy Quart last month, leapfrogged his Southport & Ainsdale clubmate James Robinson into third spot in the merit, 365 points adrift of leader Mark Young, from Longridge.
