THE Leeds Cup, professional golf’s oldest trophy inaugurated in 1902, returns to De Vere Oulton Hall next week (Aug 25-26) after five years.
And, as expected, it has attracted all the leading PGA North Region players including several former winners.
Among them is Ilkley’s Ryder Cup man Gordon Brand, attached to Hollins Hall, who won the PGA Seniors’ Championship at Slaley Hall two years ago.
His name was inscribed on the magnificent silver trophy - donated by Leeds City Council - in 1988 alongside legends such as the first winner Harry Vardon, the only man to claim six Open Championship titles, George Duncan, Ted Ray, Archie Compston and Ryder Cup stars John Fallon, Ted Jarman and Alex Caygill.
Chris Clarke, a 26-year-old assistant at Wath club Waterfront Golf, defends the title he won last season when he beat 2007 winner John Wells, from Cherry Burton, in a play-off at Cobble Hall – the tournament’s original home.
He will face a formidable line-up which includes Mossock Hall’s David Shacklady, a beaten finalist in last week’s Glenmuir Professional Tournament, fellow Lancastrian Steve Parry, who leads the regional Order of Merit, and a strong North East contingent led by Westerhope’s Mike Nesbit and Morpeth’s David Clark.
De Vere, who have restored their sponsorship after a five-year absence preceded by an agreement which lasted more than a decade, have provided a £12,500 prize-fund for the event which is preceded by a pro-am.
