LANCASTER assistant Richard Woodruff thought he’d blown his chance of playing in the De Vere PGA North Region Championship when he dropped four shots in as many holes in the west qualifying round at Heron’s Reach.
But he repaired the damage with an eagle at the fifth followed by a birdie on his way to a three-under-par 69, matched by Runcorn’s Kevin Hartley, to lead the 27 qualifiers who will return to the Blackpool course for the tournament on September 29-30.
Hartley had a stroke of luck when he holed his approach shot to the 377-yard 11th and also picked up a couple of birdies.
Stockport assistant Jamie Storey was third, one off the pace.
Meanwhile, Eastham Lodge’s Matthew Shea birdied the last two holes at Sale to win the De Vere Leeds Cup west qualifier with a five-under-par 65.
Storey was in a three-way tie for second place on 68 with Abergele’s Stuart Runcie and Dukinfield professional David Green.
A total of 33 earned the right to peg up at De Vere Oulton Hall on August 25-26.
