Simpson’s back in the fold

DAVID Simpson, left out of the Cumbria side that lost to Yorkshire on his home course Penrith on Saturday, played himself straight back into it after winning the Penwortham Rose Bowl.

The 20-year-old scratch man strung together rounds of 71 and 73, six-over-par in total, to prevail by three shots from the host club’s Craig Bolton.

And after phoning his county captain Martin Hand with the news Simpson was told he would be in the side to face Durham at Bishop Auckland in July.

“I omitted him on Saturday because I felt he had not put in the work and he had lost form but this win puts him back in the reckoning,” said Hand.

“He only missed one match when we won the Northern Counties League last season so we all know what he is capable of.”
