PAUL Howard won his first Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit title after a tight finish in the Pines Trophy at Hillside.
The Southport and Ainsdale plus one man got the verdict on countback, his second round 71 denying Shaw Hill’s Jon Hurst who paired a 73 with his opening 70 for a one-under-par total.
Howard lagged two shots behind the Lancashire player at the half-way stage, his 72 including a crucial birdie at the last which partly atoned for a double bogey at the 14th.
And his victory would have been more decisive but for dropping a stroke on the final green in the afternoon.
Formby’s Ian Winstanley finish third, a shot off the pace, but stayed in second place in the merit behind Howard’s clubmate James Robinson.
