Cheetham quick off the mark

NEIL Cheetham began his defence of his PGA North Region Order of Merit title when he fired a flawless a six-under-par 65 to take a two-shot lead in the Kerr Investments Cumbria Classic at Carlisle.

The Dore & Totley attached professional, who spends most of the winter playing in South Africa, rolled in three birdies on each loop as he gave himself a timely tonic ahead of next week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

He goes into the second of two rounds at Penrith, in the first ranking event of the season, pursued by Lancashire trio David Shacklady, from Mossock Hall, Swinton Park’s David Smith and Haigh Hall’s Craig Corrigan.

LEADING SCORES (Par= 71): 65 Neil Cheetham (Dore & Totley); 67 David Shacklady (Mossock Hall), Craig Corrigan (Haigh Hall), David Smith (Swinton Park); 68 Simon Edwards (Windermere), Jeff Mathews (Mytton Fold); 69 Freddy Valenti (Pryors Hayes).
