Cheetham finishes the job

NEIL Cheetham led from the front to win the Kerr Investments Cumbria Classic and move to the top of the PGA North Region Order of Merit which he won for the second time last season.

The former Dore & Totley head professional, who is still attached to the Sheffield club as he divides playing schedule between home and the South African Sunshine Tour, followed up his opening 65 at Carlisle with a 67 at Penrith.

An eight-under-par total gave him a two-shot advantage over the rest of the field headed by Haigh Hall’s Craig Corrigan, who fired a brace of 67s, in the first of the season’s eight ranking events.

Two further back was Mytton Fold’s Jeff Mathews along with another regular winner David Shacklady from Mossock Hall.

Cheetham, 40, got off to a flying start at Penrith when he holed his approach for an eagle two at the second then added birdies at the sixth and 11th.

His only bogeys over two rounds came at the 13th and 16th by which time he was well on the way a timely victory as he heads to Wentworth next week for the BMW PGA Championship.

LEADING SCORES: 132 Neil Cheetham (Dore & Totley) 65 67;134 Craig Corrigan (Haigh Hall) 67 67; 136 Jeff Mathews (Mytton Fold) 68 68, David Shacklady (Mossock Hall) 67 69; 137 Mike Nesbit (Westerhope) 74 63, Aran Wainwright (Mid Yorks) 70 67.
