Alwoodley Announced as Grand Final Venue

There will be a brand new matchplay competition for Yorkshire golfers to contest in 2010.

The Yorkshire Matchplay Golf Championship is a new knockout tournament set to launch next year and is open exclusively to amateur golfers in Yorkshire so long as they are a member of a club affiliated to the county union.

The competition is split into four sections; North, East, South and West with the winners of each region, in both the Individual and Pairs event, invited to contest the Grand Final next September. And is has just been announced that The Alwoodley Golf Club in Leeds will host the climax of this new tournament.

Tournament Director, Edward Battye, is thrilled to have secured the Alister MacKenzie designed course as the Grand Final venue, “I am over the moon that we have managed to be able to finalise such a fantastic course as the location for our finale. I personally rank it as the best in Yorkshire and believe that the chance to play here will add an extra incentive for those entering 'The Race to Alwoodley'.”

Alwoodley is steeped in tradition and is currently ranked by the independent website, www.top100golfcourses.co.uk, as the 25th best in England – the 13th highest rated inland course. The club was founded in 1907 and forms part of the famous stretch of golfing territory on the northern fringe of Leeds. The course got a five star rating in Golf World’s "1000 Best Courses in Britain & Ireland" and according to Today's Golfer is "one of the best-kept secrets in British golf."

Since the turn of the millennium the testing heathland course has already hosted a plethora of major tournaments, both amateur and professional, including; the Yorkshire Amateur Championship, the British Mid-Amateur Championship, The English Amateur Championship, the British Ladies Open Strokeplay Championship and the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship. It has also been a regional qualifying course for The Open on several occasions and has been chosen to host the 2011 English Women’s Open Strokeplay Championship.

Julie Slater, the Manager at Alwoodley commented, “We are really pleased to be the host venue for the Grand Final of the Yorkshire Matchplay Golf Championship and delighted to be associated with this new tournament in it's inaugural year. I am sure the grand finalists will enjoy their day on our fine championship course."

That is unlikely to be in doubt because as well as two rounds on the famous links the finalists will be greeted with breakfast on arrival where a draw will be made for opponents prior to the semi-finals. They will enjoy a light lunch before the morning winners do battle in the afternoon to determine the overall champions. For the morning losers a third place play-off will be held whilst the day is concluded with a presentation dinner.

Entries do not officially open until January, however, golfers can find out more information and register their interest by visiting www.yorkshirematchplay.com.

Christmas Golf Open Competitions

Brooks completes stunning victory in Morocco

Daniel wins Samanah Masters satellite tour shoot out by 11 strokes.

Daniel Brooks stormed to victory at the Samanah Masters 2009 Satellite Tours Grand Finale at the Samanah Country Club in Marrakesh, carding a final round 70 to win by 11 shots at 19 under par.

The win caps a fine year for the Londoner who gained his Challenge Tour card by finishing third on the PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit. Brooks opened the tournament by shooting a course record 64 to lead at eight under after the first round, and then broke that record the following day with a nine under par round of 63 to hold a ten shot advantage at 17 under going into the last day.

The Mill Hill man showed no signs of nerves in his final round and recorded three birdies from the second hole to move to 20 under and two further birdies at the start of the back nine saw him stretch his lead further still. The only real blemishes in his three rounds came right at the end when he bogeyed 15, birdied 16 but picked up a treble-bogey six at the 17th to reduce his margin of victory to 11 strokes – picking up the €10,000 winner’s cheque and gaining an invite to the Hassan II Golf Trophy event on the 2010 European Tour in March.

“It’s a fantastic result for Daniel after securing his 2010 Challenge Tour card on the EuroPro Tour and everyone at the Tour is delighted for him,” said Eddie Hearn, chief executive of the PGA EuroPro Tour. “We expect him to go on and follow in the footsteps of Richard Finch and Ross Fisher and become successful on the European Tour. His impressive victory just goes to show the strength of the PGA EuroPro Tour which is firmly established as the leading developmental tour in the world.”

The tournament welcomed the top 15 players for the EuroPro, Alps, EPD and Nordic tours, and Brooks was joined in the top ten by fellow EuroPro players Scott Jamieson, James Ruebotham and Nicky Harris. Order of Merit winner Jamieson carded a final round of 71 to join Ruebotham in a three-way tie for fourth spot at six under par, one stroke ahead of Harris whose final round of 70 forced him into a trio tied for seventh.

George Woolgar’s level par final round saw him finish in 14th spot at three under par, one stroke clear of Andrew Thorpe who finished in a five-way tie for 15th, with Jack Doherty in 20th spot at one under.

Final Scores:

JACK NICKLAUS, ARNOLD PALMER AND SEVE BALLESTEROS BACK THE CHALLENGE!

Four Living Legends Support the National Golf Club Challenge!

Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Seve Ballesteros join Gary Player in giving their support to the National Golf Club Challenge.

The Challenge, recently featured on the European Tour website, will bring hundreds of golf clubs, and thousands of golfers together on the same weekend as part of a nationwide charity golf event - with the aim of raising a million pounds for the superb Help for Heroes charity.

With golf clubs entering on a daily basis, the National Golf Club Challenge is on course to become the largest amateur charity golf event to take place in the UK. The Challenge will be held on the 24th and 25th of July 2010 and is free to enter.

Messages of support for the Challenge have come from golf professionals, celebrities and now from four of the greatest golfers the game has ever seen: Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer and Seve Ballesteros.

Jack Nicklaus, globally recognized as the greatest golfer of the last century, fashioned a competitive career that spanned six decades. Named Sports Illustrated’s Individual Male Athlete of the 20th Century and awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom (the highest honor bestowed on a civilian), Nicklaus’ legend has been built with 118 professional tournament victories worldwide, a record 18 professional major-championship titles and two United States Amateur Championships. He is the only player in history to have won each of the game’s majors at least three times (six Masters, five PGA Championships, four U.S. Opens, three British Opens), and is the only player to have completed the career “Grand Slam” on both the regular and senior tours.

Jack, now widely recognised as an acclaimed course designer, a global ambassador and spokesperson for the game, and a philanthropist who, among many causes, assists troops at home and abroad, said, “For all of us who love the game of golf and for those of us who have been given so much because of this great game, it's time to pay it back. And in doing so, we pay it forward. The efforts we have seen in the United States and now in the UK through Help for Heroes and the National Golf Club Challenge are truly a meaningful and impactful way for the golf world to recognize, thank, honor and aid our wounded and weary troops. I have always held a special place in my heart for the golf courses and clubs of the UK for the ways they embrace our game and respect its rich history and traditions. So it is only fitting that the birthplace of golf gives these efforts new life.”

Arnold Palmer amassed 92 national and international championships throughout his professional career. Besides his magnificent performance record, his magnetic personality and unfailing sense of kindness and thoughtfulness to everybody with whom he comes in contact have endeared him to millions throughout the world.

After leaning about the Challenge, Arnold Palmer said "What an excellent way for the golf world, through the Help for Heroes program, to honor and aid the needy wounded troops of the UK with such a far-ranging and potentially-lucrative fund-raiser as the National Golf Club Challenge next summer at The Belfry."

Gary Player is renowned as much for his dedication to the principles of excellence as he is for his golfing accomplishments. As the only modern golfer to win The British Open in three different decades, Gary Player has achieved the kind of worldwide acclaim reserved for only a handful of sporting greats.

"Every day many of us take for granted the sacrifices made by those who fight for our freedoms." Gary comments, "We take for granted the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon playing a round of golf, while a soldier is off firing a round of ammunition. It is our obligation to support those wounded heroes who have dedicated their lives to protecting ours. The National Golf Club Challenge is a meaningful opportunity for the golfing community to demonstrate their own commitment and support for these brave individuals."

Seve Ballesteros continues to be an inspiration in his personal life as much as he was during his professional career. In the Ryder Cup his presence from 1979 and, particularly from 1983, was the element of inspiration that changed the course of this competition.

After hearing about the Challenge, Seve commented. "I feel the National Golf Club Challenge is a fantastic way to get the golfing world to support a very worthy cause. I have dedicated my life to golf and think it's great to see my sport at the centre of a huge fundraising event for UK soldiers. Good luck and play well!"

Stacey Jeffries, the National Golf Club Challenge Event Director commented “We are very humbled to have the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Seve Ballesteros join Gary Player in supporting the National Golf Club Challenge.”

"We are passionate about making the National Golf Club Challenge a resounding success for all involved." Stacey continued, "To have four of the greatest golfers who have ever lived support our initiative to help our injured troops in their time of need, is a major boost to the Challenge and what it strives to achieve."

The format for the National Golf Club Challenge is very simple; the Challenge will coincide with each participating golf club's monthly stableford event, with each club turning the day into their own charity golf event, raising much needed funds for Help for Heroes.

The competing clubs will submit their aggregate scores from their best scoring 10 players. This will determine the top 6 golf clubs against standard scratch, who will then be invited to compete in the National Final.

The Grand Final, sponsored by YourGolfTravel.com, will be the conclusion of the 2010 National Golf Club Challenge. The two day event – hosted by The Belfry, one of the world’s leading golf resorts, and four times host to the Ryder Cup – will be a superb grand final, featuring a practice day, golf clinic, overnight accommodation, the final competition and a gala dinner, including guest speakers and the prize presentations.
