Wind cheater Cowan storms ahead

GEORGE Cowan mastered a testing wind and slick greens to post an opening round of three-under-par 68 for a two shot lead in the Thompson Davis PGA North Region Championship at Marriott Hollins Hall.

The 29-year-old Westerhope professional would have put even more space between himself and the chasing pack of five players but for a couple of lapses on the home stretch. “I missed the green with my approach to the 16th then drove into the thistles on the next hole,” he explained.

But Cowan, whose one other bogey came at the second, more than compensated for his mistakes with four birdies on the outward half and an eagle at the 365-yard 12th which he drove comfortably before draining a five-foot putt. “I’m glad I got that on the card because the back nine was tough,” he added.

The same stretch clearly did not present a problem for David Shacklady, the most prolific player on the regional circuit despite his failure to win an Order of Merit title in 20 years of trying.

The Mossock Hall man started his round at the 10th and was four-under-par for seven holes before erring on the 18th. He then dropped four more strokes, offset by a brace of birdies in his 70.

On the same mark was past champion Robert Wragg, from Hallowes, who was on course for the outright lead until he ran up a treble bogey on the ninth, his last hole, after his four iron tee-shot plunged into a rocky outcrop. "I had to take the punishment,” he said ruefully.

FIRST ROUND LEADERS: 68 George Cowan (Westerhope); 70 David Shacklady (Mossock Hall), Aran Wainwright (Mid-Yorks), Robert Wragg (Hallowes), David Astin (Woodsome Hall), Neil Cheetham (Dore & Totley); 71 David Thwaites (Brookdale), Sean Doherty (Bury), Chris Sands (SkyCaddie), Ian Keenan (Royal Liverpool); 72 Fraser Kelley (Malton & Norton), Vincent Guest (Teesside), Alex Boyton (Skidby Lakes), David Smith (Swinton Park).

Sargent calls the shots again

NICK Sargent won his eighth pro-am in three months when he top scored in the curtain-raiser for the Thompson Davis PGA North Region Championship at Marriott Hollins Hall.

The Eastham Lodge professional grabbed five birdies in a three-under-par 68 to prevail by a shot from Close House's Jonathan Lupton and fellow North Easterner George Cowan, from Westerhope.

Bridlington Links assistant Alex Belt defends his title in the 36-hole tournament which starts today (Tuesday).

PGA Cup player Andrew Barnett, from North Wales, guided his team to success with a 14-under-par total to deny Sargent a double by one stroke.

THOMPSON DAVIS PGA NORTH REGION CH'SHIP PRO-AM(Marriott Hollins Hall): 68 Nick Sargent (Eastham Lodge); 69 Jonathan Lupton (Close House) 70 George Cowan (Westerhope); 72 Mark Bradley (Chorley).

East Midlands player takes top spot in first Golfshake.com Open

Lionel Roberts of Nottinghamshire took the top spot in the first Golfshake.com Open representing the high handicap category from the East Midlands region.

Playing off a 19 handicap and receiving 14 strokes on the day he shot an impressive 33 points at De Vere Wychwood Park at the final event on Saturday 19th September 2009. Lionel, said: 'The whole event was fantastic and Wychwood Park was a fitting venue for the final, I'm just pleased I managed to hold it together on such a testing course.'

The inaugural year of the Golfshake.com Open, saw 8 regional events organised by members taking place across 8 courses around the country representing 7 regions with over 300 people it total taking part. The tournaments entrants were split in 2 handicap categories with 30 finalists of the regional events making it through to the final event at Wychwood Park.

GolfShake.com is Europe's leading golf score tracking, handicap and community website; featuring society management, 10000s of course reviews and active forums. Their Managing Director, Darren Ramowski said 'It was great to see members from the site come together to organise the regional events with so many people taking part'

He added, 'Wychwood Park offered a true golf test and challenge for the competitors and was a fantastic venue for the final. Most of the players struggled for consistency especially around Wychwood's Amen corner of 13,14,15 and 16. Lionel's performance was worthy of taking the top spot with a consistency over the front and back 9 which very few other players managed to do.'

Second spot went to Steve Martin from the Yorkshire region who also shot 33 points but missed out on countback. Steve, from Huddersfield commented: 'The course was a great challenge, and I agree with the club pro wholeheartedly in that both good and bad shots got their just rewards. Thanks for a truly wonderful day the organisation was superb, I shall definitely be entering next years competition. '

The 3rd overall prize winner went to Mark Seymour who was the highest placed low handicap qualifier who carded 31 points in 4th place overall and qualifying from the South West region.
The winners all received a golf break from De Vere plus prizes from Golfbreaks.com and clothing from Bunker Mentality.

Belt bids to tie up PGA North Region Championship double

ALEX Belt attempts to become the first professional to successfully defend the PGA North Region Championship for nearly 40 years at Marriott Hollins Hall Golf and Country Club next week (Sept 29-30).

And if the Bridlington Links assistant continues the form that has swept him to two titles this season he’s every chance of emulating former Ryder Cup man Lionel Platts, the last player to achieve the double back in 1970-71.

Belt, 23, has already notched the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship and North Region Assistants’ Tournament for the Harold Lees Trophy to he will take some stopping in the 36-hole tournament, sponsored by International freight forwarders Thomson Davis, which starts on Tuesday, a day after the pro-am.

One of his biggest threats is 31 years his senior - Ilkley-based Gordon Brand who has so far not repeated his 2008 success when he landed the De Vere Collection PGA Seniors’ Championship and the Travis Perkins Masters.

But he has the advantage of regularly practising at Hollins Hall so local knowledge could be a key factor.

Brand, a former Ryder Cup player, maintained his playing privileges on the PGA European Tour from 1977 to 1994 but perhaps his career highlight came when he was runner-up in the 1986 Open Championship at Turnberry, five strokes behind Greg Norman.

Before progressing to senior level, he tried his hand at refereeing, ran a car-washing business and played regularly in North Region events, winning the Leeds Cup in 1988.

Also expected to be in contention is Manchester Open champion Chris Hanson, who recently moved to Woodsome Hall; Leeds Cup winner Chris Clarke, a first year trainee assistant at Wath club Waterfront Golf, and Jonathan Lupton, from Close House near Newcastle, who recently claimed the Powerade PGA Assistants' Championship, in association with FootJoy.

Former European Tour professional Neil Cheetham, attached to Dore and Totley, leads the Order of Merit which will be decided at the end of the tournament.

Bedford denies Young in merit drama

MIKE Bedford clinched the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit title after winning the Ashton Trophy at St Annes Old links Golf Club despite racking up the same number of aggregate points as Mark Young.

On a dramatic day in the penultimate event of the season, the Cheshire county champion from Prestbury denied his Lancashire counterpart a record third successive crown because he had a superior ratio of victories.

Bedford claimed four to the Longridge player’s one as the total points finished level for the first time since the merit started in 1988.

The two adversaries will miss the final fixture at Nelson on Sunday because they are competing in the England County Champions’ Tournament at Woodhall Spa but no-one else can catch them.

And they knew exactly what they had to do at St Annes Old Links because they were drawn together. Young trailed by two shots at the half-way stage as Bedford opened with a 69 to which he added 70, five-under-par all told.

Young birdied his final hole for a 74 to claim sixth place but the 45 merit points he picked up left him agonisingly short.

DETAILS: 139 Mike Bedford (Prestbury) 69 70; 142 Mark Rabone (Southport & Ainsdale) 70 72; 143 Paul Thornton (St Annes Old Links) 68 75; 144 Michael Hearn (Chorley) 69 75; 145 Jake Watson (St Annes Old Links) 72 73, Mark Young (Longridge) 71 74; 146 Adam Andrews (Ashton-in-Makerfield) 74 72, Andrew McLoughney (St Annes Old Links) 73 73; 147 Anthony Stirling (Formby) 71 76; 148 James Wilson (Formby) 72 76; 149 Andrew Hull (Wakefield) 73 76, Martin Walsh (Styal) 73 76.

ORDER OF MERIT LEADERS: 850pts Mike Bedford (Prestbury), Young (Longridge); 530 Carl Thompson (Manchester); 510 John Carroll (Huyton & Prescot); 505 Paul McFerran (Childwall); 470 Jack Brooks (Pleasington); 410 Tommy Fleetwood (Formby Hall); 395 Ollie Smith (Ashton-on-Mersey); 370 Ian Kenwright (Haydock Park); 300 Matthew Cox (Royal Birkdale); 270 James Wilson (Formby); 250 Zac Harrison (Preston); 245 Charles Durnian (Fairhaven).

The full Northern Order of Merit points table will be posted later this week.

Home comfort for McFerran

PAUL McFerran made the most of home advantage to win the Childwall Trophy to add to the Grange Park Rose Bowl he claimed last month.

First round leader Mark Young finished third to extend his lead in the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit to 105 points, the Lancashire champion from Longridge closing in of a record third successive title.

His county team-mate McFerran trailed him by a shot after opening with a 71 before edging ahead with 68 which contained an eagle at the 541-yard 10th and five birdies, four on the front nine.

As Young closed with a 71, Formby’s Mark Duncalf carded 68 to beat him into second place on countback.

DETAILS: 139 Paul McFerran (Childwall) 71 68; 141 Mark Duncalf (Formby) 73 68, Marl Young (Longridge) 70 71; 146 John Carroll (Huyton & Prescot) 73 73; 148 Daryl Callister (Mount Murray) 75 73, Robert Fawcett (Dukinfield) 74 74, Andy Addison (Ashton-in-Makerfield) 74 74; 149 Ray Tennant (Formby Hall) 73 76, Kurt Van Flute (Childwall) 72 77; 152 Ryan Corbett (West Lancs) 79 73, Rob Whatham (Grange Park) 76 76; 153 Liam Ball (Chorley) 79 74.

ORDER OF MERIT LEADERS: 805 Mark Young (Longridge); 700 Mike Bedford (Prestbury); 530 Carl Thompson (Manchester); 510 John Carroll (Huyton & Prescot); 505 Paul McFerran (Childwall); 470 Jack Brooks (Pleasington); 410 Tommy Fleetwood (Formby Hall); 395 Ollie Smith (Ashton-on-Mersey); 370 Ian Kenwright (Haydock Park); 300 Matthew Cox (Royal Birkdale); 250 James Wilson (Formby), Zac Harrison (Preston); 245 Charles Durnian (Fairhaven).

Doherty’s Euro boost

SEAN Doherty gave himself a perfect tonic as he prepares for next week’s European Tour stage one qualifier in Scotland when he won the Lancashire PGA Championship at Accrington.

The 25-year-old Bury assistant has only just returned from a three-month lay-off after injuring the tendons in his wrist.

“I happened soon after I’d finished fourth in the Northern Open at Spey Valley. All I could do was teach in the meantime but this win should sharpen up my game,” he said as strung together rounds of 68 and 70 for a two-under-par aggregate.

A shot adrift were past winners Barry Taylor, from Houghwood, and Haigh Hall teaching professional Craig Corrigan.

Dogherty, sponsored by Bury businessman Rob Foy, embarks on his fourth successive attempt to win a tour card at Dundonald Links.

“I’ve reached the final stage twice so let’s hope this will be third time lucky,” he added.

Bill Fletcher, who coaches at Leisure Lakes Academy, won the senior prize for a sixth year running with an 80.

DETAILS: 138 Sean Doherty (Bury) 68 70; 139 Barry Taylor (Houghwood) 70 69, Craig Corrigan (Haigh Hall) 69 70; 140 David Shacklady (Mossock Hall) 72 68; 141 Colin Maroney (unatt) 70 71, David Smith (Swinton Park) 72 69, Chris Mathews (Samlesbury Golf Centre) 68 73; 142 Paul Wright (Accrington) 71 71, Jeff Mathews (Samlesbury Golf Centre) 69 73, Martyn Hamer (Ellesmere) 68 74. Seniors: 80 W Fletcher (Leisure Lakes).

Belt notches another victory after five-hole shoot-out

ALEX Belt tied up the PGA North Region Assistants’ Tournament for the Harold Lees Trophy when he beat Lee Shepherd at the fifth extra hole at Dore and Totley.

The 23-year-old from Bridlington Links won an enthralling battle with the Willow Valley man who went agonisingly close to settling the issue at the third play-off hole, the 18th.

Belt saved his par thanks to a delicately executed chip to a foot after overshooting the green and was then relieved to see Shepherd’s 10-foot putt scrape the edge of the hole.

The pair were deadlocked in normal time on level par total of 144 over two rounds but Belt, who defends his PGA North Region Championship crown at Marriott Hollins Hall at the end of the month, looked home and dry half-way through his second round after grabbing four birdies.

But he dropped three shots at the 10th and despite leaked two more at the 12th and 16th he still looked a likely winner until Shepherd birdied the 17th.

And it was at the same hole in sudden death where Belt, winner of the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship at Bull Bay earlier in the season, made sure of the title with a par after his opponent paid the penalty for a blocked drive.

Daniel Haughian, assistant at Adlington Golf Centre and overnight leader by three shots after a 68, ran up a 10 on the par five ninth and double bogeyed the next on his way to a 79 and a share of sixth place, three off the pace.

LEADING SCORES: 144 Alex Belt (Bridlington Links) 71 73, Lee Shepherd (Willow Valley) 73 71; 145 Michael Ramsden (Bondhay) 73 72, Matthew Marsh (Hallowes) 71 74, James Salt (Ashton-under-Lyne) 71 74; 147 Luke Allen (Lindrick) 77 70, Ben Scott (Clitheroe) 71 76, Daniel Haughian (Adlington Golf Centre) 68 79.

New venue and sponsorship for PGA North Region Championship

IT’S all change for the PGA North Region Championship as it switches from the North East to Yorkshire after attracting new funding.

International freight forwarders Thomson Davis will sponsor the 36-hole tournament, which will include a curtain-raising pro-am, at Marriott Hollins Hall Golf and Country Club on September 29-30.

The course, set among 200 acres of moorland with stunning views across Baildon Moor and the Aire Valley, offers a fair test in an event that will determine the outcome of the region's Order of Merit for the Mike Slater Memorial Trophy.

John Wildman, MD of Thomson Davis, said: “We have a long history in supporting a variety of events and charities through a range of sports, most recently an annual 20/20 cricket match.

“We look forward to working with the PGA and Marriott Hollins Hall and creating a great event – the venue is spectacular and we all hope the golf on show will be similarly so.”

Peter Rishworth, the resort’s director of Golf, added: “Considerable preparation on and off the course has been carried out to ensure that the players enjoy their time here. “Strategic bunkering combined with undulating fairways and greens are particular features offer a real challenge to professionals and amateurs.

“The championship course will once again provide a great test to players like former Ryder Cup star Gordon Brand who practices and trains here. The event is set to be a huge success.”

North Region secretary Graham Maly said: “This is a great venue and with a new sponsor we’re confident it will provide a fitting end to the season.”

This is the 62nd staging of the tournament inaugurated in 1946 and boast many famous past winners including former Ryder Cup players John Fallon, Alex Caygill and Lionel Platts and more recently European Tour professionals Andrew Murray, Phil Archer and Paul Eales.

Meanwhile, Bridlington Links assistant Alex Belt has confirmed he will defend his title and will clearly be the man to beat again following his victory in the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship at Bull Bay.

Also expected to be in the field is Jonathan Lupton, a 30-year-old from Middlesbrough and now based at Close House near Newcastle, who recently swept to a comprehensive win in the Powerade PGA Assistants' Championship, in association with FootJoy, at The London Club.

Former European Tour professional Neil Cheetham, attached to Dore and Totley, leads the Order of Merit from a group of eight players all within striking distance.

Bradley’s a splash hit in the Lakes thanks to a second hand putter

MARK Bradley won the Lakes Classic at Windermere for the second time in nine years with the help of a second hand putter he bought from a member of Chorley Golf Club where he is professional.

After rolling in six birdies in each round for a seven-under-par aggregate, he said: “I also drove the ball well which kept me out of trouble.

“I’ve tried a few putters this season but this one certainly did the job for me.”
The last time Bradley stole the thunder in the long-running pro-am he had to endure torrential rain. But on this occasion he missed most of the wet weather on the final day because of an early tee-time.

“I was fortunate because conditions deteriorated after I’d finished,” he said as he posted rounds of 62 and 65. He was two shots ahead of former Kendal pro Peter Scott, who is based at Leisure Lakes near Southport, and PGA Cup player Andrew Barnett, from North Wales Driving Range.

Meanwhile, Bradley is hoping to keep his form for the Lancashire PGA Championship at Accrington on Thursday.

Then later in the month he’ll be pegging up in the North Region Championship at Marriott Hollins Hall, Bradford, which he won in 2006.

LEADING SCORES: 127 Mark Bradley (Chorley) 62 65; 129 Peter Scott (Leisure Lakes) 64 65, Andrew Barnett (North Wales DR) 64 65; 130 Neil Cheetham (Dore & Totley) 65 65, David Smith (Swinton Park) 69 61, Nick Sargent (Eastham Lodge) 62 68.

Plews homes in on Mere Trophy

JAMIE Plews capitalised on home advantage to win the Mere Trophy and pick up his first points of the season in the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit.

A brace of 70s over the course where he recently won the club championship added up to two-under-par and left him two shots clear of Lancashire player Ian Kenwright, of Haydock Park.

Plews eagled the ninth in the first round but after couple of bogeys on the home stretch he trailed half-way leader, Chorley’s Andrew Palmer, by two.

But as conditions deteriorated, he kept his composure on a day when the battle for the merit title intensified.

Lancashire champion Mark Young, from Longridge, accrued more crucial points in his quest for an unprecedented third successive crown, edging to within 70 of Prestbury’s Mike Bedford.

Pleasington’s Jack Brooks also moved in contention and with five fixtures left there’s a prospect of a tight finish.

Ashworth bang on target in Revidge Cannon

MARK Ashworth called the shots for the second year running in the Revidge Cannon at Blackburn.

The Clitheroe player left himself with some catching up to do after opening with a 73 but he outstripped the early leaders with a best-of-the-day 68 in the second round for a one-under-par aggregate.

It contained five birdies, three on the outward half, sandwiching back-to-back bogeys between the other two as he won by three shots from Lancashire player Jack Brooks, from Pleasington.

Longridge’s Mark Young took third place a stroke further back to pick up more valuable points in his bid to win the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit for a record third successive time.

DETAILS: 141 Mark Ashworth 73 68; 144 Jack Brooks (Pleasington) 71 73; 145 Mark Young (Longridge) 72 73; 147 Andy Taylor (Chorley) 74 73; 148 Shawn Field (Nelson) 75 73; 149 Chris Lander (Hesketh) 76 73; 150 Paul McFerran (Childwall) 77 73, Tom Stuart (St Annes Old Links) 74 76, Paul Biggins (Accrington) 73 77, Daniel Nutter (Clitheroe) 73 77; 152 Adam Perfect (Ashton-under-Lyne) 75 77, Anthony Holden (Preston) 72 80.
