CRAIG Corrigan is not having things all his own way in PGA North Region pro-ams this winter.
The Haigh Hall teaching professional, joint first in the Mansell Finishes Series at Royal Liverpool in December, had to settle for a share of top prize again at Fairhaven where his five-under-par 67 was matched by Welshman Simon Edwards.
Corrigan slotted his fifth birdie at the final hole to deny his Windermere adversary, who also picked up five shots during a flawless round as Penwortham’s Darren Hopwood finished third on 68.
Meanwhile, a big field is expected at Royal Liverpool next Wednesday (March 4) for the fourth of the six Mansell events. Edwards is 12 points adrift of Romiley’s Matthew Ellis in the Order of Merit as Corrigan trails by 23.
LEADING SCORES: 67 Craig Corrigan (Haigh Hall), Simon Edwards (Windermere); 68 Darren Hopwood (Penwortham); 70 Chris Crowder (Lee Park); 71 Alan Crompton (Haigh Hall), Chris Mathews (Samlesbury Golf Centre); 72 Andrew Baguley (Leigh), Tim Maxwell (Knutsford), Steve Parry (unatt).

PGA EuroPro Tour will visit Surrey and Kent venues this summer!
The PGA EuroPro Tour is pleased to announce that Burhill Golf Club and Prince’s Golf Club have been added to the 2009 schedule.
Prince’s Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent, hosted the Open Championship in 1932 and continues to be a regular venue for the Open Championship final qualifying, last holding it in 2003 and preparing to host again in 2011 when neighbouring Royal St George holds the Open Championship. As well as putting on other high profile professional, senior and amateur competitions, Prince’s will be welcoming the PGA EuroPro Tour back to the South East after hosting an event in 2002.
“Prince’s Golf Club is pleased to welcome back the PGA EuroPro Tour, where the players can be assured of a warm welcome on a tough golf course,” said Bill Howie, Director of the Prince’s Leisure Group.
The PGA EuroPro Tour event will take place over the Shore and Dunes courses beginning on Tuesday June 9 and finishing on Thursday June 11. The course will be open for practice rounds on Sunday with the Pro-Am the following day.
“Prince’s Golf Club is one of the most challenging venues in British golf and we’re delighted that we are back there this summer,” said Danny Nickless, operations manager of the PGA EuroPro Tour. “The standard of play is going from strength to strength and the players will be tested to their fullest potential when they tackle Prince’s in June.”
Burhill Golf Club welcomes the PGA EuroPro Tour from Thursday July 30 to Saturday August 1 when the players will tackle the spectacular New Course which opened in May 2001. The club celebrated its centenary year in 2007 and the PGA EuroPro Tour will be its first exposure on television.
“Burhill is a fantastic addition to the 2009 schedule,” said Danny Nickless. “Colin Mayes and his team have a venue to be proud of and I’m sure that they will pull out all the stops for what promises to be a great event on a very challenging golf course.”
Colin Mayes, Chief Executive of Burhill Golf & Leisure Ltd, said: “We look forward to welcoming the PGA EuroPro Tour to Burhill Golf Club’s New Course, which will present an excellent challenge to the young professionals and an enjoyable experience for sponsors, corporate teams and their guests playing in the Pro-Am.
“Burhill Golf Club, with its two 18-hole championship courses and stately clubhouse, close to London and the M25, is a popular venue for business golf. Hosting a PGA EuroPro Tour underlines the quality of our New Course and is an excellent opportunity for companies to entertain clients in a unique way, playing alongside Europe’s best up-and-coming professionals. It should be an outstanding event.”
Burhill’s Director of Golf is former European Tour rookie of the year Pip Elson, father of PGA EuroPro Tour regular Jamie. The event starts a day later than usual, with the Practice Round on Tuesday July 28 and the Pro-Am on Wednesday.

Boost for pro-ams but sponsors sought for Order of Merit events
Labels:
PGA North Region
THE North Region are bucking the economic trend by increasing the number of pro-ams this season.
And there is an optimistic outlook for the Order of Merit tournaments with the Spirotech Manchester Open, at Marriott Worsley Park on July 21-23, and the Leeds Cup at Cobble Hall on August 17-19, definitely going ahead.
“We are trying to attract sponsorship for the North Region Championship and we are awaiting confirmation for The Rock,” revealed secretary Graham Maly.
“So far we have 12 new pro-ams on the schedule, including the 36-hole Northumberland Classic at Matfen Hall and Hexham, which is an encouraging sign in view of the economic downturn but it’s important that we maintain our merit events.

“We are hoping to keep the championship in the North East with Burgham Park, its home for three years, no longer available. One club has approached us but we are still at the negotiating stage as we are with The Rock.”
Maly also appealed to professionals to enter their own pro-am teams to boost entries. “It would be helpful if they could support these events,” he added.
The Manx Classic switches to Mount Murray (July 29-August 1) and other establish events confirmed are the Cumbrian Classic (May 21-22), Brough Classic (June 8-9), Lakes Classic (September 5-6) and the Aberdovey and Royal St David’s Pro-am (September 15-16).
The Northumberland Classic is on October 1-2 and other new pro-ams are at St Annes Old Links, Kirkby Lonsdale Ladies, Werneth, Keighley, Davenport, Eccleston Park, Eaton Ladies, Huddersfield, North Manchester and at centenary clubs Denton and Ringway.

Victory is a breath of fresh air for Smith

DAVID Smith warmed up for the Gulf Air PGA Pro-Captain Challenge in Bahrain when he beat Paul Eales by a shot in the PGA North Region Overseas Pro-am at Portuguese resort Vilamoura.
The Swinton Park assistant, winner of the MEN Manchester Open in 2007, compiled an impressive 10-under-par in an event reduced to three rounds after the first day was washed out. It was his first taste of competitive golf since early December and whetted his appetite for Bahrain later this month.
Smith opened up with a 69 at Vale Do Lobo, reaching the turn in one-over before picking up five birdies on the way back. He fired a two-under 71 at the Old Course then signed off with a 68 at Royal to leapfrog Eales who had been two in front at the start of the day.
“I birdied the top four strokes holes in the last round which was unusual,” said Smith who apart from a cheque for £700 also took out of the event the need to sharpen up his short game.
“That’s been down to lack of practice but it’s given me something to work on before I go to Bahrain,” he added.
Partnering him in the Middle East in the 36-hole final, supported by BMW, will be Swinton Park captain Dave Torkington, a taxi driver.
