Smith aims to home in on Spirotech Manchester Open

DAVID Smith defends his Manchester Open title at Marriott Worsley Park on July 22-23 – after a two-year wait.

The event was cancelled last season after a week of incessant rain waterlogged the course along with many others in the area.

Smith, assistant at nearby Swinton Park, will peg up with the leading PGA North Region professionals in the 36-hole tournament sponsored by Spirotech.

And he believes he could have an advantage over the rest of the field because he knows the course well and is coached by the club professional David Screeton.

“I’ll be seeing him in the next few days for a check up,” he said. “I’ve not played is many events this year but in view of the recession we are all grateful for the sponsorship.

“It’s a great tournament and an extra incentive is that it counts for Order of Merit points.

“I enter every competition with the intention of winning and my confidence has been lifted for this one because I’ve just changed my driver which has helped me to have a run of below par scores.

“I had a good finish in the Glenmuir Professional Championship and only missed out on a place in the PGA Cup team by three shots.”

Among past winners in the 130-strong line-up are Gatley’s Jon Cheetham (2003); David Clark (2004) from Morpeth; Aldersey Green’s Richard Bean (2005) and Robert Wragg (2006) from Hallowes. The tournament will be preceded by a pro-am.
