JOHN Carroll won the Crosby Challenge Plate for the third year in a row to lift himself into third spot in the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit. The former Lancashire champion from Huyton & Prescot fired rounds of 75 and 74 for a five-over-par aggregate in testing conditions.
He chalked up three double bogeys, two in the morning, but five birdies limited the damage as he prevailed by two shots from Hillside’s Richie Blundell who denied the host club’s Jon Greenough on countback.
Carroll, beaten by Tommy Fleetwood in the Amateur Championship quarter-finals at Formby in June, is 10 points adrift of the Formby Hall Walker Cup hope who in turn is 20 behind county team-mate Mark Young, from Longridge, who is chasing his third successive merit title.
